Lakers-Celtics Game 5

June 16, 2008

Last night was the first opportunity for the Celtics to clinch their first series since 1986, but the Lakers made sure they would have to play atleast one more. Much like game four, the Lakers came out firing on all cylinders.Kobe did a lot of the work in the first quarter for the Lakers, making four 3-pointers in the first eight minutes and a made free throw which gave the Lakers a 25-15 lead. The Lakers were working the triangle to perfection, with the extra pass on almost every play. This caused the Celtics to extend the defense and Mamba made them pay when he faked a deep two and fired a pass to Vladimir Radmanovic to make it 29-15.

Lamar, a perfect example of the rollercoaster this series has been for the Lakers, drove the lane to put the Lakers up by 16, and Pau's two in the final second made the score after one Lakers 39, Celtics 22.

As a Laker fan, I could only muster a half-smile, knowing it was almost the same position the Lakers were in on Thursday night. I was right to be worried, the Celtics started their comeback even earlier and outscored the Lakers 30-16 in the second quarter. Paul Pierce, was once again lighting the boys from the city of angels up. He would finish with 36 points (16-19 from the line), 6 boards, and 8 assists. The main reason for Pierce's onslaught, was due to the terrible defense of Vladimir Radmanovic and Luke "the mole" Walton. He would blow by the Lakers defense and get to line, for what seemed like every position down court.

Luke Walton (son of former Celtic Bill Walton) continued to earn his nickname of the mole, with a horrendous 2 points and looked like a football player on defense with his 5 fouls in a total of 10 minutes of playing time.

The third quarter, which the Celtics have outscored the Lakers by a lot to a little, was finally played tough by the Lakers. They showed the Celtics they were not going to back down and thanks to the play of Pau Gasol, outscored the Celtics 24-18 in the quarter. Bringing the score at the beginning of the fourth to Lakers 79 Celtics 70.

The fourth quarter did not disappoint, just as they did in game four, when the Lakers pissed away the lead they staged the biggest comeback in finals history , the Celtics pushed the Lakers to the edge with yet another rally. This one fell short, but the outcome was always in doubt especially when Pierce made two free throws with 1:14 remaining to get the Celtics to 97-95.

Fisher then shot a brick and the Celtics appeared to be in control when Pierce fought off two Lakers for a rebound. But as he dribbled down past half-court, Bryant reached around and fouled Pierce knocked the ball away to Odom, who then fed Bryant for his slam.

Still, much like the tramps who wash your windows in DC even after giving them your change, the Celtics would not go away .

After Bryant missed one of two free throws with 16 seconds left, Eddie House hurled and made a miraculous 3-point shot to make it 101-98 with 14 ticks left. House then nearly stole the inbounds pass, but Bryant, lain out on the floor, somehow got the ball to Fisher, who drew a quick foul.

Fisher then made his two free throws and stole Boston’s last pass as Lakers fans, stunned a few nights ago, left Staples dreaming of another championship. Before the game Phil Jackson was asked how they needed to approach the game.

"A lot of things can happen,” he said. “We’re young enough and dumb enough to be
able to do this.”
Game 6 is Tuesday night on ABC, coverage starting at 8:30 and the tip at 9.
