Late Nite with Jimmy Fallon, featuring The Roots?

December 9, 2008

Jimmy Fallon announced that The Roots, will be his house band when he steps into his new role as a late night host in March of 2009. Black Thought and ?uestlove should make the chitchat with the band mates much more tolerable than the unyielding cackling of Kevin Eubanks. However I don't know if they will be able to match the chemistry between Conan O'Brien and Max Weinberg. Either way its great news and gives me a reason to watch.

?uestlove and Black Thought are hilarious on stage. Last time I saw them was at the 9:30 Club, in DC, for the Hip Honors Tour. They didn't play one song of their own. They played covers or jammed. Anyway, the question is how will Jimmy Fallon be able to get a word in. Still, it seems kind of weird to think of them as a "house band." I mean, THe Max Weinberg 7 isn't the E Street Band, but then again, when have The Roots ever been predictable?

I wonder how long they plan to accompany Jimmy on the show. Will it be long term or will they have a new band every year the show is on? Personally I can't see The Roots doing the show, recording, touring all at the same time for an extended period. But who knows?

I was wondering that too. I can only see them doing it as a short term thing.
