The Numbers of the Day are:

January 28, 2009

67, as in Matt Bonner went 6 of 7 from behind the arc, to help San Antonio beat Utah 106-100, or the number could be 1,120, to represent how the Spurs went 11 for 20 as a team  on 3-pointers. One could probably assign the value of infinity to this game and get away with it.  It had a lot of numbers in it.

The number of the day could have been 28, since the Spurs have now won 28 games in a row when scoring more than 100.  The number could have been 14 because half of those 28 wins have come this season.

The number could have been 10 because 10 of Manu Ginobili's 13 came in the 4th quarter, or it could be the 10-o run that started the 4th quarter for the Spurs. Going into even more detail, the number could have been 8, as in 8 of Manu's 10 4th quarter points came from the foul line.

The number could have been 24, as in Tony Parker led the team  with 24 points.

Another possibility is 2,217,321, which represents Mehmet Okur's stat line for the day of 22 points, 17 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals, and 1 block, but if we gave credit to his line, then we'd have to also say the number of the day is 249,823, which was Tim Duncan's game of 24 points, 9 rebounds, 8 assists, 2 steals, and 3 blocks; but the most important numbers coming into this game were 175 and 4.

The Jazz had lost 4 in a row coming into the game.  The Spurs had lost their last 4 games at EnergySolutions Arena, a horrible name for a stadium, where the Jazz were 17-5 coming into this game.

If there are important numbers coming into the game, then there have to be important numbers leaving the game, and the number to bare in mind is 3,014.5.  Last night's win brought the Spurs record to 30-14 and a 1/2 game ahead of Denver for the 2 seed in the West.  This team is not going to get the 1 seed.  The Lakers are glued to it, but as last year's playoffs taught us, this Spurs team has to play as few games on the road as possible to reach the Finals.  The conference finals are going to go through LA.  The first two rounds need to go through San Antonio.

So, in Pop's infinite wisdom, we trust.

I think Manu's contribution was not just equally but crucially important in this win. Let's face it, winning in Salt Lake City is no easy thing.

Manu's free throws, clutch rebound and all of his assist (not to forget those 4 steals!) gave the Spurs the extra advantage in this result.

By the way, check out my recap and let me know what do you think about the game.
