Manny (finally) signs with the Dodgers

March 4, 2009

It has been 4 months to the day that the Dodgers offered Manny a 2 year $45 million deal, and it looks as if that's the contract he signed. The signing is big for the team and should help the Dodgers in their effort to continue last year's success, but there are a lot of if's surrounding the club. They will be good, if they find a fifth starter. They will be good, if the young guys can continue to improve. Chad Billingsley has the stuff to win a Cy Young, if he can avoid injuries. So instead of focusing on those ifs, I figured it would be a perfect time to see what the Dodgers could have gotten if they spent the $45 million on something else.

  • The 2008 Florida Marlins, whose total team salary was just $21,836,500
  • 3,464,203 MLB official baseballs
  • 900,180 fungo bats
  • Adam Dunn, Bobby Areu, Ryan Dempster, and Derek Lowe (This does not include incentives, so you would actually save some money.)
  • 11,250 Jenn-Air grills
  • 78 Robosauruses
Not bad options but I am just glad its over and he will be back patrolling left field at Dodger Stadium. Because now Manny can get back to doing what he does best, hitting baseballs being Manny.
