LCB Hoops Picks: On the Verge of Madness

February 27, 2010

Myself and Berndon take a look at the biggest games on the college landscape, giving you our picks for Lobos v. Cougars and 'Nova v. 'Cuse. The picks are, as always, after the jump.

(10) New Mexico Lobos vs. (13) BYU Cougars @ 4:00 on Versus:
Langston: With both teams tied at the top of the Mountain West, this game will decide the winner of the regular season crown. These are two talented squads, I think. I mean, they have to be, seeing how highly ranked they are, right? To be honest, I have no idea. I really don't think I have watched a Mountain West game since Keith Van Horn and Andre Miller were destroying the league at Utah. I do know former Iowa head coach Steve Alford is leading the Lobos. I know BYU's coach Dave Rose was a part of "Phi Slamma Jamma" at Houston and that he has had a great run as coach, leading his team to three conference titles and three tourney berths in his first four years in Provo. And I know BYU has the next "Great White Hope" in some guy named Jimmer Fredette. Seriously, his name is Jimmer. Bad names aside; he can finish at the rim, shoot, penetrate, push the break, and all that other stuff Dick Vitale goes on-and-on about. And Jay Bilas said he will be a good pro. Though, to be fair, he said the same thing about Adam Morrison. But I digress.

It's obvious I don't know much about the two teams facing off in Provo. Though, I need to pick a winner. Now, I could look at the season stats or their previous match-up (which New Mexico won), and decide who has the edge. But in all honesty, I don't really feel like going that deep into a game that, at best, will produce a Sweet 16 team. So I'll just go with my gut and pick the Cougars. Why? Because their coach is beating cancer, and that's much harder than a team from New Mexico. BYU 68, New Mexico 61.

Berndon: I too have not seen either of these teams play. Both have had a decent run in being ranked in the top 25 for most of the season, and have identical 26-3 records. They even had identical team rebounds, turnovers, blocks, and shot the exact same from the field in the first meeting. So to get down to brass tax, they are evenly matched. I'm going to give the nod to BYU simply because they are at home. BYU 73, New Mexico 67.

(7) Villanova Wildcats vs. (4) Syracuse Orangemen @ 9:00 on ESPN:
Langston: These two teams have a lot in common. Both teams have top flight coaches in Jay Wright and Jim Boeheim. Both teams have a shot at the Big East regular season title, winning this game would almost certainly secure that title for either team. Both teams have premier players, Nova with Scottie Reynolds and 'Cuse with Wesley Johnson. Both players have a formidable sidekick, Corey Fisher for Reynolds and Andy Rautins for Johnson. So what will be the deciding factor? Will it be free throws, rebounding, second chance points? In my humble opinion, it will be none of the above. Nope, I think it will be teamwork. And earlier this week one of these two teams displayed the type of teamwork needed to pull out a game of this magnitude. That team was Villanova.

So what'd they do that was so special? Well, Corey "The Bayonne Bomber" Stokes received a citation and fine for disorderly conduct. Nothing out of the ordinary right? Wrong. According to the report, it notes that Stokes was urinating between two cars while surrounded by teammates. Now I'm sure Jay Wright was none to happy with the bad press. But he had to be excited that his team could pull together for a teammate in need. For that moment of solidarity, I'm taking 'Nova. Go 'cats! Figuratively, of course. Villanova 75, Syracuse 73.

Berndon: That's hillarious, I hadn't heard about that. This one will be interesting because I think Cuse could murder Villanova on the boards. But I also don't think that the Orange have anyone that can stop either Reynolds or Fisher defensively. I know when I played high school ball, me and 4 or 5 teamates hated our coach so much we had a postgame drinking party which consisted of us toasting every opened beer by saying "Chancellor Mentality," since this was our coach's favorite saying, taunting us by implying that we were getting too big headed because we started the season 6-2. We finished out each beer by saying "Eff Coach Crooks." Quite simply because we hated him.  We too had solidarity, even though none of us were sighted for public urination (although I did puke all over my boy James' white couch). That Chancellor team finished the season 10-12. So where I'm going with this is that postgame drinking parties where you are "all for one and one for all," are nice, but do nothing on the basketball court. I'm picking Syracuse, 77-68.

Berndon's Upset Special: I'm going to go for broke here, as I'm picking Oklahoma St to knock off Kansas in Stillwater. I think that James Anderson is going to go apeshit early in the game, getting the crowd into it and putting Kansas in an unfamiliar position where they have to come from behind. The Jayhawks haven't looked good lately, and I think they're due to take an L before the tourney starts. Ok. St. 65-64.

I guess we could do more research and act like we watch every game for every ranked team, but that would make for a very insincere post.

As for the citation, if he was urinating on a tree or in the grass, I don't think he gets reprimanded. But since he was so close to someone's property, it probably warranted the citation and fine. Also this all happened on Senior Night and none of them were arrested for alcohol related charges, so I think it was a fairly innocent night out for the guys.

I just thought it was funny that both of you started with...I haven't seen these two teams play. Of course, i would have started mine the same way too because who has seen BYU or New Mexico play this year

Yeah, exactly. I was pretty excited about this game, to see is Jimmer could stack up to the hype. But due to some fight Comcast and Directv is having, Versus is no longer available on Directv. It looks like I'll be watching Berndon's upset special.

Ummm, so you guys really felt it necessary to call the New Mexico vs. BYU game? Seems like you should have really focused on something more important, like George Mason vs. whoeverthefucktheyplayedintheCAAtoday.

That would be Northeastern. But yeah, we like rankings. They make us feel safe.

Luckily since our directv isn't being installed until monday...i got to watch that New Mexico-BYU game on Versus. Both those teams are legit. It's too bad Jimmer is a bit of a vaginahead and couldn't muster up enough balls to play through a stomach flu. BYU probably wins if he plays, although there backup point guard reminded me of the "Family Matters" episode where Urkel comes into the game and just destroys the other team. This guy Michael Loyd (yes BYU actually has black people on their squad) almost single-handedly one the game for the Mormons. Also currently patting myself on the back for calling the Ok.St. upset, although watch, I'll go 0-2 on the NBA games tomorrow.
