LCB Hoops Picks: March Towards Madness

March 6, 2010

This week me and Berndon take a look at the big game between Texas and Baylor... Oh and two schools from North Carolina that are playing sometime this weekend. I hear there is some sort of history between the two institutions.
Texas Longhorns vs. (21) Baylor Bears @ 4:00 on ESPN:
Langston: I know almost nothing about Baylor's basketball team. I know I have been saying that a lot lately, but can I really be blamed? No one thought they would be ranked this year, meaning they're never on nationwide. They don't have a John Wall or Wesley Johnson, so it'd be rare to run across articles on their players futures in the league. And the last time they got any national media attention, was for all the wrong reasons. Basically I have no barometer of their talent or skills, yet I have to pick them. But before you run off, I actually have sound reason (even if public urination being a team unifier sounded good at the moment) this time around. Well, I actually have two reasons. First of all, Texas is fading fast. After winning their first seventeen games, they have lost their way going just 6-7 in their last thirteen. Secondly and most importantly, Rick Barnes isn't too concerned about it. No, seriously, read the quote:
"We would love to win a national championship, but we're not obsessed with it because we're obsessed with these guys trying to live their NBA dream....... What's happened to Kevin Durant, LaMarcus Aldridge, T.J. Ford -- I'd give up a national title for all of our guys to be able to live their dream."
That type of talk shouldn't sit too well with the fan-base and is reason enough to bet against them. So, I will. Baylor 73, Texas 68.

Berndon: I've talked a lot on a weekly basis about how I pretty much think Texas is garbage. They are even worse without Dogus Balbay, who was their best perimeter defender. I've also talked a lot about how LaceDarius Dunn is wildly underrated and one of the best 2 guards in the country. I look for him to absolutely go off on the Longhorns, with Baylor getting the win, 79-67.

North Carolina Tar Heels vs. (4) Duke Blue Devils @ 9:00 on ESPN:
Langston: Um, can I pass? I hate betting on los diablos. It has nothing to do with their shade of blue, their players, Dicky V, their coach, or their fan-base. It has everything to do with the source of their mascot, the French. As a proud Southern-American male, I hate everything related to that hoity-toity country. Well, except for french fries, baguettes, crepes, French-Canadians, french kissing, laissez-faire economics, democracy, existentialism, Zinedine Zidane, Tony Parker's music, New Orleans, Claude Monet, Pierre Charles L'Enfant and a couple of other nouns I am probably forgetting at the moment. You get the picture, it's pretty obvious I'm not a fan of the French.

Included in my hatred for everything from the land of Marianne, is a whole lot of disgust in les Diables Bleus.  However, even though I hate them so, I cannot pick against them. For this season they're simply better. Now, I don't like it any better than the next guy. But as we all know, the truth is sometimes hard to digest. Especially when it has to do with the French...well... unless it's their cuisine.... or their wine....Hey! Have you ever tried a nice Bordeaux? You should totally get some. Couple it with some Camembert and saucisson sec, and I guarantee you a truly delightful evening.... Sorry... What was I saying?.... Oh yeah, Teach gets five more gray hairs and Duke wins. Duke 75, UNC 64.

Berndon: I"m sitting here licking my chops on this one. I've always hated when people justify the horrific season their favorite team just had by saying, "well at least we beat so and so." Redskins fans are really good at doing this, justifying their ineptitude by claiming that all they care about is that they beat the Cowboys. So no, if the Tarheels knock off Satan's favorite college on Saturday, the season will not be a success. It wil still be a frustrating mess that still leaves me stratching my head. But with the opportunity to ruin the Blue Devils' potential ACC championship on their own court, it would not make the season anything close to succesful, but it would be a hell of a building block for this young talent to run with. It would also make me piss myself laughing. Carolina has no business winning this one, but I still believe. John Henson will block some shots, Will Graves will bury a couple of three's, Marcus Ginyard won't turn the ball over, Deon Thompson will play like a monster on the glass. And Carolina will win, 73-72. I'm a Cubs fan, I'm used to the whole "wait till next year" concept. Next year starts tomorrow night.

Upset Special: See above.

I had hopes UNC might win. Duke's losing to Maryland eliminated those for me. I really think that Duke comes out firing on all cylinders and delivers about a ten to fifteen point Duke victory, giving Henson a taste of bitterness that lasts long into the offseason, motivating him to focus the wide range of his potential into a Goldfinger-like laser beam. Henson's best line of next year, "No, Coach K, I expect you to die."

Teach: Responses like that are the reason I visit and write for this site. I also have to expect that Dexter Strickland plays the hairless cat in this scenario?

That's an interesting debate: who is Blofeld's hairless cat?

Dexter Strickland, Leslie McDonald, or Larry Drew

If Henson is Goldfinger, I assume Duke/K is Bond and the rest of the ACC is the mafiosi that Goldfinger uses for his plot. But who plays the role of Oddjob? Pussy Galore?

I would also like to add that the Wear brothers should play the roles of the nameless henchmen.

If anyone is Pussy Galore, it's N.C State.

I guess I won't be getting any royalities for that catchy little slogan I thought of at the end of my post.
