SEC Week 2 Preview

September 6, 2014

The annual SEC-G5 challenge is nigh. It's a pretty boring week for games in the land of team speed, pretty much unworthy of predictions. But while I'm here, I might as well give a quick glance at the Vols and the other two games that are worth keeping an eye on:

Tennessee hosts coach cannon Arkansas State. The Red Wolves are the cream of the Sun Belt crop, despite hiring their fourth coach in FOUR seasons. It's pretty amazing what they've built in Jonesboro, despite their inability to retain coaches. Their spread offense is fast paced and can give the young Vol defense (devoid of depth) fits. The Vols should still win, however. They need to get the ball moving on the ground and continue the Vol swarm on defense. And hopefully Worley can continue not sucking, he was fantastic last week against an overrated Utah State team. Prediction: Vols 31, Arky State 18.

South Carolina meets up with the sea grant institution of the 51st state, the East Carolina Pirates. The Cocks need to rebound after getting ripped by Kenny Trill and his freight train corps of receivers. ECU is led by a fantastic QB in Shane Carden. The Pirates are a capable bunch and represent one of the best squads in the still weird to mention American Athletic Conference. They beat both UNC and NCSU last season. If they are taken lightly, they will punch USC in the mouth. Still, I like the SEC Speed to do what it does. Prediction: USC 42, ECU 28.

Ole Miss makes the trip to Nashville to take on the Dores. It's the only SEC conference match-up this week. The only reason this is worth keeping an eye on, is to see how far Vanderbilt has dropped since Franklin left. Questions that will be answered with this game include; Was the blowout loss to Temple an aberration or are they just rejoining Kentucky in their historic roles as SEC punch lines? Did Ole Miss just play flat last week or are they overrated? Prediction; Vanderbilt has reclaimed their spot as the dumpster fire of SEC football. Ole Miss wins going away, 28 to 10.

As for the Rest of the SEC*, see the gif below. They are the purveyors of destruction*.

*UK not included. They will probably lose to Ohio. Kentucky does not football.

I think you underestimated Ole Miss' ability to purvey destruction.

That's fair. I did not, however, underestimate Vandy quickly becoming a dumpster fire again.

That you did not. I've seen wildfires leave entire forest more intact.

If VT finishes off Ohio State, could this day go any worse for B1G? If that happens, it should almost single-handedly kill any chance of a B1G team making the playoffs.

Um, should we schedule a funeral? I think a conference died last night.
