This game was excellent basketball from start to finish, which is what anyone familiar with these two teams has come to expect when they play each other. This game is also another testament that it's a fabrication the Spurs are a boring team to watch, which I strongly believe is a conspiracy developed by Lakers, Suns, and Mavs fans. Suns and Mavs fans hate the Spurs for winning championships that their teams lack the guts and cajones to win, and Laker fans despise the fact that the Spurs, a small market team, with one celebrity fan, are the team of the decade and feature the player of the decade in Tim Duncan. It's embarrassing that Jeff Van Gundy was asked last night to name his top three NBA players, and he named Lebron James and Kobe Bryant and then said put whoever you want at number three. He then rambled off T-Mac, Wade, and Paul as possible thirds. Meanwhile, a two-time MVP and four time NBA champion was right in front of him going for 20 points, 10 rebounds, 8 assists, 2 blocks, and 1 steal. Van Gundy's top three players from the '90s probably wouldn't have included Hakeem the Dream either, but it would have included Patrick Ewing, John Starks, and Anthony Mason.
This game meant nothing to the guys who have been in these locker rooms for a while now, but it meant everything to Roger Mason and Matt Bonner. Unless the Spurs make a move before the season is over, then these two guys will have to be the difference between beating the Lakers in a 7-game series or having a repeat of next year. Two guys that are so integral to a team's championship hopes deserve nicknames. Bonner has already been hailed the Red Rocket, which sounda like a 1930's comic strip hero. Then again, Bonner's shoulder hoist of a shot is also from a bygone era when peach baskets were part of everyday life. However, Roger Mason, Jr still needs a nickname, especially after his late game heroics last night and against the Suns Christmas Day.
Christmas Day
Last night
I've always thought the leg kick was a cheap play by a shooter, but I've always liked Roger Mason, going back to his UVA days. I've also always liked G.I. Joe and ninjas. Ninjas are assassins. Assassins kill, so from here on out, I'm calling Roger Mason Snake Eyes, unless anyone's got a better suggestion.
