When will it end?

February 10, 2009

So to add onto the A-Roid news, Miguel Tejada is now being charged for lying to congress and faces as much as a year in jail if convicted on the misdemeanor charge of making misrepresentations to Congress. He will likely receive a lighter sentence due to federal guidelines. I've been trying to wrap my head around this fiasco since earlier today, and I have come to two conclusions.

My first conclusion is that it would be prudent of MLB and Bud Selig to release the full list of players that failed the PED tests in 2003. MLB needs to either protect all 104 of the players, or none at all. I understand that Alex Rodriguez's name is the most important name on the list, since he is in arms reach of a host of baseball records. But as Deaner pointed out, a lot of guys used steroids to get over that hump just so they could get a taste of the bigs. So how many clean players were left in the minors due to the rampant steroid abuse in baseball? They weren't playing on the same level due to the amount of drug use in professional baseball. And in turn the clean players that did it the right way, paid the biggest price. They lost out on a chance to reach their childhood dreams of playing in the majors.

My second conclusion is that Bud Selig needs to resign immediately. How long would you expect to remain the boss, when hundreds of your employees are cheating at their jobs and are using illegal drugs? Not long right. Although he won't admit it, he was warned about the steroid abuse and he had the obligation to take the necessary steps to keep America's game as clean as possible. He failed to do that, and more recently he is letting all the players take the fall as he sits idly by acting as if the problem is fixed. He has had blunder after blunder after blunder, and yet he is getting paid as well as anyone in the league. And unlike the rest of the country, he has job security through the next election in 2012. How can we trust this man to clean the sport up? When he is the one who let this happen to our game.

The firing of coach Fulmer

November 4, 2008

It was announced yesterday that Phil Fulmer would be stepping down at the end of the season. The real story is that Phil was fired and will be getting one of the biggest buyouts in college football history. Last year Fulmer signed a new seven-year contract worth $2.4 million, and he's owed a $6 million buyout payable over 48 months as part of that contract. His staff is owed an additional $3.55 million, however that figure could decrease depending on how many of them get jobs next year.

I don't really know how to take the news. The past four seasons has been soul draining but Fulmer means a lot to the team, institution, and the fans. He's been at Tennessee for more than 30 years as a player, assistant coach and head coach. He guided Tennessee to a 45-5 record from 1995-98 and back-to-back SEC championships (3 total), and he also led the team to a national title in 1998 with an unbeaten 13-0 record. The man is UT.

Recently the program hasn't been able to match the magic of the 1998 season. The Vols have lost 31 games since the end of the 2001 season, 19 of those have been by double digits. They haven't been in a BCS game or won an SEC championship since 1998. Along with the mounting losses, the program has had numerous arrests. So many in fact, that it spurned the Fulmer Cup on Every Day Should Be Saturday (EDSBS).

Although it worries me to see the only coach I have known for the Vols headed out the door, it was time for Phil to go. Now the Fulmer Farewell tour begins, hopefully giving the team enough incentive to take Phil to a bowl one last time as the leader of Tennessee.

AD Mike Hamilton wrote an open letter to Vol fans letting us know that the national coaching search will begin immediately. He also included that the Kentucky game on Nov. 29 is when we celebrate "Phillip Fulmer Day" in Neyland Stadium. It will be a sad day on Rocky Top and the mixed emotions will get more convoluted as time moves on. I just hope that Hamilton hires someone with half the heart and dedication for the Vols as Fulmer. Good luck Phil and thanks for the ride, it wasn't always smooth but it was fun.

I leave you with this photo made by the wife of Hooper from Rocky Top Talk. Edited from the original painting of Death of Julius Caesar by Vincenzo Camuccini. The picture is a good representation of Phil's firing, as the angry mob finally caught up to him.

Time Wasters: Party Time (off topic)

June 26, 2008

As the great poet Dirt Nasty once said; "Nuff’ said, I’m radical,
T-shirt say party animal". So todays time wasting videos will be about idiots doing idiotic things while drinking. My favorite shot in the world is a Flaming Dr. Pepper, its harsh and has a great after taste, yet in all my years drinking these on special occasions I have never lit myself, my friends, or my carpet on fire. Its to bad this guy can't say the same:

In the next video drunk idiot number one decides to dive across a beer pong table for $20 and drunk idiot number two decides to kick the table out of the way. Leading to a nice smack on the face and a fight. (NSFW, not safe for work)

Keep posted for the football previews, Teach is going to kick them off either today or tommorrow.
