Before spring training started John Mclaren had a lot of things going for him including; a great new pitching staff thanks to the acquisition of Erik Bedard, monster payroll, key free agents that would change the tone, job in one of the best cities to play, and a cool name. As of last night, he has one of those things and its not the job.
Manager John Mclaren is the latest casualty in Seatlle, general manager Bill Bavasi was fired earlier in the week. Bench coach Jim Riggleman was promoted to run the team, starting Friday night in Atlanta. He became Seattle’s fifth manager in six seasons. \
Interim GM Lee Pelekoudas said.
“We hadn’t shown any improvement for the last couple of months. In fact, we were
probably regressing,”.... “To give the players a
chance to improve … we thought a different voice was needed.”
The Mariners are 25-47, 17 1/2 games behind the first-place Los Angeles Angels in the AL West and “in quicksand,” said president Chuck Armstrong. The team will most likely miss the playoffs for the seventh straight season and could become the first team with a $100 million player payroll to lose 100 games.
Mclaren is getting the pink slip for the sins of his former GM, Bill Bavasi ,who made the trades and signed the overrated/underachieving players (Adrian Beltre, Richie Sexson, Carlos Silva, and Jarrod Washburn) to monster deals. It seemed as if every Bavasi deal turned south. Bavasi was the one who risked the future by trading Adam Jones and George Sherrill to the O's for Bedard. Mclaren is the second manager to get the axe this season and this week, and he wont be the last. Other top candidates to get fired by the end of the year include the Blue Jays John Gibbons, the Brewers Ned Yost, and Cecil Cooper of the Houston Astros.
