Manager Deathwatch 2008

June 21, 2008

Within hours of our post yesterday about the firing of John Mclaren, where we listed the top candidates to get canned next, one of our top candidates did. Raving lunatic John Gibbons of the Blue Jays was fired yesterday, for reasons much like Mclaren, but he was given much more time in Toronto to get the job done. He will be replaced by Cito Gaston, who led the team to two World Series titles in 1992 and 1993.

The Blue Jays entered Friday having lost five straight and 13 of 17 games to fall to 35-39, 10 1/2 games out in the American League East.
"We've underachieved at this point with a good club," general manager J.P.
Ricciardi said."There's a lot of the season left and we've got a chance to
turn
things
around."Ricciardi said Gaston, 64, will manage the rest of
the year.

The Jays also fired three coaches — Marty Pevey, Ernie Whitt and Gary Denbo.

Gibbons is the third manager fired this week, following Willie Randolph (Tuesday) and John McLaren (Thursday). It is the first time there were three managerial changes in a four-day span within a season since May 1991, when the Cubs fired Don Zimmer, the Orioles fired Frank Robinson and the Royals removed John Wathan.
