Could Strahan return from retirement?

August 25, 2008

According to New York Daily News writer Ralph Vacciano, Michael Strahan would consider returning for $8 million that is only $1.5 million higher then what the Giants offered him before he retired. With the Giants in a bind with Osi Umenyiora out for the season, it seems like the obvious thing to do, is pony up the cash for the future hall of famers return. According to the source that Vacchiano cited:

"If the Giants make a sincere overture, it's a good chance that Strahan would consider coming back," the source said. "There are other things he has to take into consideration: the money and his contract with Fox. But if the Giants really want him, they have a shot. It's not out of the question."

But most believe Strahans probability of returning is "doubtful" as the Giants are content with moving Mathias Kiawanuka from linebacker to his old position at defensive end. Strahan would not be the same, at least right away. He has changed his workout routine from heavy weights to cardio and machine work and has lost 10 pounds of muscle mass. The chances of him getting back into football shape is worth looking into for the Giants, it could put them right where they need to be to contend in the NFC East.
"I haven't really talked to anyone at this point in time about anything,"
Coughlin said. "I'm sure that Jerry Reese and I and ownership will look long and
hard at whatever options are out there and do what is best here at this point in
time."

A lot would have to work out in the Giants favor for this to happen, but I think the Giants would be dumb to overlook their best player for the last decade. But what is in it for Strahan? He won his ring, he got his sacks (141.5 of them), he definately was paid well for his services, and he left on top. I have a hard time believing he would come back but you never know. Afterall he is quite the showman and maybe he could a little of Favre's thunder.
