NFL Midseason Awards

November 6, 2008

It is time to doll out our mid-season awards for the NFL:

Offensive MVP: Clinton Portis, RB of the Washington Redskins is well on his way to his first league MVP award this season. He leads the league in rushing with 995 yards, has 150 yards receiving and has fumbled only once. Add that into the fact that he is one of the better pass protecting running backs in the league and Portis is literally doing it all this season.

Honorable Mention: Phillip Rivers, QB Chargers. Although the team hasn't been winning often, Rivers has played his tail off. He leads the league in TD's with 19, QB rating 107.8, and is second in the league with passing yards. If the defense can get its act together, the Chargers will be able to make a run at the AFC West crown.

Offensive LVP: Chris Perry, RB Bengals. He earns this award due mainly to his terrible yards per run average and his whopping five fumbles. Sure he has had to play with Ryan Fitzpatrick at quarterback, and no one should be dealt that hand. But there is no excuse to be ranked 26th in rushing when you have the tenth most rushes in the league(96 atts. 253 yards). So Chris Perry can thank his 2.6 ypc average for giving him this years LVP for the first half.

Honorable Mention: Derek Anderson, QB Browns. His 68.9 QB passer rating isn't the leagues worst, but with all of those weapons in Cleveland it might as well be. Its also the reason they will be going with Brady Quinn tonight against the Broncos.

Defensive MVP: Joey Porter, LB Dolphins. This is probably the hardest award to give out. Not because there are so many great defensive players but because Porter is such an enormous turd. He leads the league in sacks with 11.5 and has already forced 3 fumbles. I hate to admit it, but the big turd is a big force.

Honorable Mention: London Fletcher-Baker, LB Redskins. If you have a chance to watch the Skins play, get used to hearing his name. It seems like he is on every play. It is nothing new for Fletcher, but its still pretty amazing for an undersized line backer who was undrafted out of college. He has tallied 75 tackles already with 51 of them being solo tackles.

Defensive LVP: Vernon Gholston, Jets. I saw what CGolden at Revenge of the Birds said about him and I couldn't agree more. He's learning a new position so this probably isn't fair but seven tackles in eight games for a top six pick is unacceptable. You'd think he would be able to stumble upon a few more tackles with luck alone.

Honorable Mention: DeAngelo Hall, CB cut from Oakland after 8 games. He doesn't get the nod as this was more of a salary move more than anything. Hall was improving with every game, but wasn' t playing up to his pay check.

Coach of the Year: Jeff Fisher, Titans. How a team with a Kerry Collins at the helm and a talentless wide receiving corp remains unbeaten is beyond me. He is also owner of the leagues best mustache.

Honorable Mention: Tom Coughlin, Giants. After winning the Super Bowl the Giants could have easily become complacent. However the Giants look ready and roaring for another Super Bowl run, and he is a major reason why.

Coach who doesn't deserve to be called Coach: Marvin Lewis, Bengals. In years past the Bengals have led the league in arrests but this year they are close to leading the league in losses. With all the potential this team has and the lack of discipline they have displayed over the past couple of seasons, there is no excuse for this guy to still have a job.
Honorable Mention: Norv Turner, Chargers. A team that consists of LT, Antonio Gates, Philip Rivers and Vincent Jackson that plays in the AFC West and has a 3-5 record. Case closed.
