NBA 2009-2010 Trade Deadline Recap

February 18, 2010

To celebrate the passing of the trade deadline, the staff at LCB HQ decided to collaborate and give you our thoughts on all the trades in a couple sentences or less. The results are, as always, after the jump..

Feb. 13th
The Mavericks land Caron and friends:
Langston: I'm trying to be my typical dry sarcastic self, but this trade makes it tough. Just a good deal all around.
Teach: Washington welcomes the Josh Howard era by raising another Washington Mystics attendance banner.
Berndon:The key to this trade is Haywood. I really like how this gives the Mavs an inside presence to match up with Bynum and the other centers out West.

Feb. 16th
Langston: Look at the photo above, go ahead, look at it. That's the smile of a man who just escaped basketball's version of purgatory.
Teach: With Oden and Pryzbilla out, Marcus Camby arrives like Mary Poppins to help a collection of young kids fly kites, jump inside of chalk drawings, and laugh on the ceiling; and if things don't work out, at least he has an umbrella (cause--get it--it rains a lot in Portland).
Berndon: With the emergence of Jerryd Bayless, Steve Blake was expendable. Camby helps the Blazers stay affloat, but with Brandon Roy still injured, this might not matter too much.

Feb. 17th
Langston: A lot of people assume this is a good trade because Big Z will be bought out and find his way back to Cleveland. At the same time, a lot of people think The Insane Clown Posse make good music.
Teach: Has anyone noticed how Antawn Jamison is a bottle of Heinz 57 Ketchup?  He just goes with everything, from french fries to steak to chicken and fish, and the best thing is one doesn't even have to call plays for him.  He can score 20 from a bottle, packet, paper cup, or even splattered over everything.
Berndon: The Wizards' fire sale continues, and the Cavs get 20 points a game to ease LeBron's scoring load, enabling to continue setting up others as he is having his best season distributing the ball.
Langston: This trade is to the Caron/Mavs deal, what bologna is to steak.
Teach: If you've seen Eddie Murphy's 1983 film Trading Places, then you've seen the story of this trade, except there will be no orange juice scam for redemption.
Berndon: Poor Darko. They showed the graphic of Bron, Wade, Bosh, and Carmelo, and what they've done in their careers so far from that 2003 draft class at the All-Star game. And now he's considered to be on the same level as Brian Cardinal. I didn't even know he was still in the league. At least Darko isn't bald. He's got that going for him if he's trying to justify in his head that he's better than someone like that who he was traded straight up for.

The Bulls send Salmons to Milwaukee:
Langston: Am I the only one that thinks it would be funny if the Bulls shipped a truckload of actual salmon to Milwaukee? Then when confronted, they act like that was the trade the entire time... I am... I'll just let myself out.
Teach: Chicago gets money for the summer, but the darker truth of this matter is that for this trade to happen Michael Redd had to suffer another knee injury.
Berndon: Hakim Warrick will help inside, but losing Salmons makes Chicago very thin in the backcourt. Salmons hasn't been the same player as last year however, so that, combined with cap reasons makes this a good move long-term.

Feb 18th
The Rockets land Martin for McGrady:
Langston: By adding Martin, Jared Jeffries and Jordan Hill to a lineup already comprised of Budinger, Ariza, and Battier they have now cornered the market on tweeners.
Teach: This trade feels like a movie script.  A broken down superstar, trying to find his way in life again, finds himself seeking redemption, not just for himself but for all of New York, the broken down Mecca of basketball.
Berndon: Kevin Martin gives the Rockets a Reggie Miller, Rip Hamilton type 2 guard, helping them offensively. I don't like the fact that they gave up Carl Landry however.

Bobcats get Tyrus Thomas for Flip, Acie, and a pick:
Langston: Fun fact, in Chicago, mismanagement is spelled with two S's.
Teach: He's just a footnote in this trade, but did anyone else notice that Larry Hughes is now with his 5th team since 2005?  That just seems ridiculous for a guy who was on the All-Defensive first team less than five seasons ago.
Berndon: I'm torn on this one. Everyone here rips Ty Thomas, but I think he's going to figure it out one day and be a fringe All-Star type of player. He's treading water in Chitown however, so I guess it was time for him to go. Flip Murray is underrated, and could be a big help come playoff time.

Nate Robinson heads to Beantown:
Langston: It's sad to think that, sometime this year, all of Isiah's work will finally be undone.
Teach: This just seems desperate, bringing in Kryptonite to defeat Superman in the playoffs, but I guess KG's old enough to be Lex Luther.  I'm intrigued.
Berndon: The hyperactive little brother KG never wanted or asked for.

Grizzlies give up a pick for Brewer:
Langston: Apart from a select few, it seems like every team that could contend with the Lakers, either didn't do anything or got worse. This trade puts the Jazz in the latter category.
Teach: Yes, Brewer's production is down, but I feel like Utah just took a look around the West and threw in the towel.
Berndon: Since I had to look up whether this was Cory Brewer or Ronnie Brewer, it wasn't exactly a headline grabber. Good move for Memphis to add to their bench, and it doesn't seem like it will change the fact that Utah will fall out of the top 3 in the West.

Wiz keep it moving, ship McGuire to Sac-Town:
Langston: This move was great for all of 3 minutes, it cut cost and brought them under the luxury tax threshold.  Mind you I said was great, it was then that GM Ernie Grunfeld revealed that they will probably keep Gil.
Teach: Why not?
Berndon: The Sacramento Queens now have 796 players on their roster, and Tyreke Evans is the only good one.

Spurs send Theo to Charlotte:
Langston: I am pretty sure that Rod Higgins and Larry Brown did this deal figuring by 2016, the Spurs will have forgotten all about this trade and let them keep the draft pick. But in reality, they probably already did.
Teach: And Pop said the Spurs wouldn't be involved with the trade deadline.  I guess Theo can council the Bobcats' plethora of athletic bigs on what it's like to explode onto the scene only to fade away slowly like a campfire.
Berndon: I'll let the readers make their own joke here. Theo Ratliff and Drew Gooden have been passed around more than_______________.

Teach: If Jamison ever gets charged with sexual harassment, you'll wish you'd never written this line.

"He can score 20 from a bottle, packet, paper cup, or even splattered over everything. "

Also, I love that McGrady was THE big storyline of this trade deadline, despite the fact that he has been increasingly injury prone and has done nothing to warrant "superstar" status in 2 years.

My prediction for this trade, McGrady is energized for 30-40 games, before getting injured again and/or just losing his way. Also, I'm banking on him putting up big numbers as inefficiently as possible, I'm talking 4-14 from three type of nights.

Ice: But according to TrueHoop he can still pass

Also, I guess I could have saved the Jamison line for the next LCBinsider.

Teach: you should have. I would have paid $1,057.83 to read that one line for 5 minutes.

Ice, any thoughts on the one Bobcats trade that didn't go through, the one for TJ Ford?

Man, the TJ Ford trade might have been simultaneously wonderful and disastrous. For some reason I can't see Ford working well with this team. On paper it's great, but long term I think Augustin has more upside and will prove to be worth the wait.

Yeah the fact that they even thought about it is mystifying. You get rid of the logjam at guard only to trade another guard for a injury waiting to happen.

I'm not saying that TJ Ford wouldn't be nice to have off the bench, but that spinal deformities are no joke.

I think an underrated trade was Brewer to the Griz. That is one explosive, scary, young team. Give them another season or two to marinate and they could be in the hunt.

Yeah the Grizz continue to get better every day. I think they are just a point guard and a couple role guys away from being one of the best teams in the West. Ronnie just brings them one step closer to that.

I was also wondering what the Celtics gained by trading Eddie House for Nate Robinson? They got offense off the bench for offense off the bench. The last time I checked, lateral moves don't win championships. But hey, maybe I'm just missing something.

Brewer moves for the Grizz was awesome. The Celtics trade is weird. I mean Robinson's numbers aren't that much better than House's when you look at the minutes. Nate's just more exciting.
