LCB's first publishing endeavor is underway by way of Deckfight Press.
In it you will find a collection of NBA inspired vignettes and short stories.
Josh Spilker (of Deckfight) provided the motivation. I provided the writing. Mike Langston provided the images on the inside of Bill Walton as a 1970's chess champion, Kareem playing tennis, Isiah Thomas running from airplanes, and oh so much more. But I want to discuss the cover that a co-worker of mine Mike Pullum put together.
The title Everything That Dunks Must Converge is an allusion to Flannery O'Connor's collection of short stories Everything That Rises Must Converge. Pullum, an art teacher, took the simple illustration to the left of a pure, white dove being shot down by a dark, sinister arrow and made it about basketball, using implied lines, hoping to capture theologian Pierre Teilhard de Chardin's idea that there is "an 'omega point' at which the 'rising' or evolving human being would meet God." Pullum and I talked and we basically saw this as when Dr. J or MJ takes off from the foul line and we all sit with suspended disbelief watching the world reinvent its self. And that's what we hope Everything That Dunks can be, and if not, at least it'll be a basketball Wonderland where everything is just a reflection of what we see on the court, even if there really is no answer to the riddles the game presents.
And keep an eye out for the later Acts to follow. In the meantime, read it. Enjoy it. And let us know if it's complete and utter crap or something a little more noble. We look forward to hearing your feedback on the project.
