Number of the Day: 2 to the 16th Power
In baseball, In College World Series, In number of the day, In South CarolinaJune 29, 2011
The South Carolina Gamecocks won their second College World Series in a row, beating Florida 5 to 2. I caught the last few innings, and never at any point did the outcome see in doubt; the Gators were clearly playing against a stacked deck. In other words, it played out in a way that suggested there was no other way.
When Ray Tanner was asked about the victory, which was the team's NCAA record 16th straight in the CWS, he stated it simply, "Make up of this team. . . . " He said his it in a humble manner, eyes glassed over with emotion, but the message was clear: yeah--we're better than everyone.
On a side note, UVA went into the event as the number one seed but finished 2-2, defeating California twice and losing to eventual champion South Carolina twice, proving that the Old Dominion's dominance doesn't extend beyond Bull Runs and cul de sac football championships.
