Who will the Sawx get to replace Ortiz?

June 4, 2008

With the news coming out of Boston on Tuesday, what will the Sawx do if Ortiz goes for surgery? Ortiz has been one of the most consistent and dangerous hitters of the league since 2003, having at least 100 RBI and 30 HRs in each year he has played for Boston.

DH David Ortiz was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday afternoon with what Red Sox officials termed a slight tear of a tendon sheath in his left wrist. The designated hitter heard a dreaded pop in his wrist after fouling off a pitch last weekend in Baltimore, and that little pop could end up being a big season-ender. Ortiz will wear a cast on his left hand to immobilize the injury, and the Dominican slugger mentioned surgery as a possibility if the pain doesn't go away -- a situation that doctors estimated happens in 20-30 percent of the injury's cases, according to Ortiz

We all know, 70-80 percent is a good sign for the guys from beantown, but we also know if he stays out longer Manny will not be very effective. Without Big Papi to protect him the lineup, they can walk Manny without any repercussions. Now I ask, with GM Theo Epsteins penchant for making major splashes with trades and free agents, who will they go after to fill the gaping hole that Ortiz and his injury leave. Available free agents include Slammin Sammy, Barry Bonds, Ryan Klesko, or maybe even Mike Piazza. I know Piazza just retired, but I'm sure a shot at the series would bring him back. I think what is more likely to happen is either the Bonds signing or the Todd Helton trade talks will come back. With the Rockies playing themselves out of the playoff race fast, Todd Helton and his monster contract have to go. If Ortiz ends up having to go under the knife, expect Peytons old teammate to come to bean town. But I would love to see them bring back Bonds, just to see the inevitable Schilling and Bonds throwdown.
On a sadder note, John Smoltz, the staple of the Braves rotation for the last decade is going to be having season-ending surgery on his shoulder next week. But Smoltzy is hoping for a return in 2009. Smoltz has some of the greatest pitching numbers of any to throw the pill, he is the only pitcher with 200 wins and 150 saves. He also has 3,011 strikeouts, 8 trips to the all-star game, and recieved the Cy Young in 1996. Even if he is unable to come back to play in the bigs, it is just a matter of time until he gets in to Cooperstown.
