San Fransisco 49ers vs. -6.5 Minnesota Vikings @ 1:00 on FOX:
Langston: In my opinion, this is the game of the week. It consists of my four favorite players to watch not named Peyton or Nmamdi; Frank Gore, Purple Jesus, Patrick Willis, and Jared Allen. I like the Niners and their third ranked run defense, to force Favre to throw. Leading the Niners to an upset win over the Vikes, 17-14. Though if Gore doesn't play or is slowed by his injury, the Vikings will roll.
Miss LCG: My favorite rule in circle of death is the viking rule, where each player has to act like their rowing a viking boat and the last one that has to do so drinks. So I am picking the Vikings. There really is no reason other than that, well, I am to die for when I wear the color purple. Minnesota 21 San Fran 17
Miami Dolphins vs -5 San Diego Chargers @ 4:00 on CBS:
Langston: The Chargers should be 0-2 right now. In week one, they were outplayed by a Raiders team who got lucky to beat the Chiefs last week. They blew it last week calling a dive play in the redzone with a player who does his damage on the outside and most of their starting line on the DL. They could have thrown a screen to tiny Darren or gone with a play-action pass, but no, Norv called a dive play against one of the better defenses in the league. The Dolphins shouldn't be 0-2. With 3:17 left on the clock, they decided to run the worst 2 minute drill I've ever seen not involving the Philadelphia Eagles. They wasted 15 seconds before deciding to call a time-out, they called short pass plays, they ran the ball with under a minute and no time-outs, and their QBs hail mary from the 35 yard line didn't even reach the endzone; all helping lead them to the loss.
With these two facing off with their terrible clock management and play-calling, it should be tough to watch and is a real toss-up. Since San Diego is tough against the run and will force Pennington to make more of an effect on the game, I like the (and I don't see that impact being particularly positive) Chargers win 17-10.
Miss LCG: Any team, where the players are forced to wear turquoise, deserves a little back-up support when their winless. So I got the Dolphins winning this one. San Diego 21 Miami 28
Indianapolis Colts vs. -3 Arizona Cardinals @ 8:20 on NBC: Langston: There is no reason the Colts should have won last week. The Dolphins controlled the clock and embarrassed their run defense. The Colts only had the ball for 15 total minutes but thanks to Peyton and the previously mentioned worst 2-minute drill ever (not involving Philly), they still won. This week I see the Colts run defense stepping it up (Beanie and Hightower aren't as hard to stop Ronnie and Ricky), giving them a win over the Cardinals 38-21 and a 3-0 record.
Miss LCG: I feel like I owe the Cardinals a big apology. I am not a big fan of cardinals, or birds for that matter (eagles don't count in my book). Due to this prejudice against this feathered creature, I didn't pull for them in the Super Bowl. And now I feel partly responsible for their shortcomings in the biggest game of their franchises history. So to make up for it, I got the Cardinals beating the Colts 21-20.
Carolina Panthers vs. -8.5 Dallas Cowboys @ 8:30 on ESPN MNF: Langston: Jake Delhomme managed not to throw the game away last week, yet they still lost to the Falcons. The Cowboys opened the stadium in style with a monumental collapse, aided by a lot of errant Romo passes. I anticipate this game being fun to watch due to the high probability that both QBs will turn the ball over at the worst possible moment. I got Delhomme making the last mistake, giving the Cowboys the bounce back they desperately need. Boys 21-Panthers 14. Miss LCG: ROAAARRRR Panthers 14 Cowboys 10
-3.5 New England Patriots vs. New York Jets @ 1:00 on CBS: Langston: This game should show if the Patriots going younger on defense was the right move for this season. There are a lot of holes to fix on that side of the ball, and if the Jets defense can be effective with the blitz, I like the Jets chances to keep this close. Despite these circumstances, I think Brady wins this game, and Sanchez hits his first bit of adversity in the Big Apple. Patriots 21-Jets 14. Though if I was a Jets fan, I am feeling pretty good about the future. Sanchez seems to improve every time he takes the field and Rex Ryan seems to have the right combination of bravado and astuteness to lead the Jets to success. Miss LCG: Was I the only one that noticed that puzzled look on the faces of Patriot fans last weekend? They appeared as if they were simultaneously asking themselves, "Whats up with the new logo?" I like the Jets to win this game 28-20, with the game ball going to their blitz heavy defense.
-3 Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Chicago Bears @ 4:00 on CBS: Langston: When I first looked at this game, I thought the Steelers would win handily. But after closer inspection, I realized that both teams have a lot of corellation between them. Both teams will be without their best defenders. Both offenses will likely rely on the pass to win games this season. And both teams need to see more production out of their respective running games. But only one of these teams has James Harrison, and that's why I'm going with the Steelers, 35-31. Miss LCG: They say the best things in life are free. For me, one of those things, is watching the Steelers lose. Bears 38- Steelers 35.
-3 New York Giants vs. Dallas Cowboys @ 8:20 on NBC: Langston: I wasn't overly impressed with either team last weekend, and have no real inclination of what we can expect in this game. But Tony Romo is 4-0 against the Giants in his last four regular-season games, and the Cowboys have the best record in the NFC for home openers. So I'll go with that, Cowboys 38-Giants 28. Miss LCG: Last week my Skins lost to the Giants, but they did manage to hold Brandon Jacobs to 46 yards and the Giants to only 103 rushing yards, which means the Giants and Jacobs will run all over the 'Boys--you can only contain him for so long. Giants win 20-10.
-3 Indianapolis Colts vs. Miami Dolphins @ 8:30 on ESPN MNF: Langston: Last week Miami looked terrible against the Falcons. I'm not sure if that was opening day gitters, but I'm guessing it's because the wildcat has been neutralized. The Colts barely got by the Jags thanks to two turnovers in the first half. But they still managed to outplay a talented football team. They also play very well on Monday Night and in road openers, having won seven of their last eight Monday night games and their last four road openers. I think Peyton and his posse of receivers get it going and improve on those two impressive stats en route to a blow-out win, 42-17. Miss LCG: This one is pretty simple. Peyton or Pennington? Colts win 48-28.
Sunday's Games +6.5 Redskins vs Giants @ 4:15 on Fox: Langston: This a rematch of last year's Thursday night opener, where the Redskins decided to continue throwing short of the first down markers on 3rd down and ended up losing 16-7. A lot has changed since that game: Plax is in jail, the Redskins tried to get any other QB they could and failed, Eli got paid, and Derrick Ward left for Tampa Bay. However, not that much has changed. Jason Campbell still needs to prove that he can be a consistent QB week-to-week, while the Giants still have a great defensive front and a punishing running game. I like the Giants to skate by 24-17. Miss LCG: I got to meet Jason Campbell the other day. I saw the calm in his eyes, the confidence in his posture, and felt the strength in his grip. There is no way I don't take the Skins to exact revenge in the opener. Plus, he signed my jersey, so I believe that makes me contractually obligated to pick them. Skins 31- Giants 24. HAIL!!
+4 Bears vs Packers @ 8:20 on NBC: Langston: This game should be fun to watch, and will probably be the best NFL game of the weekend. Both teams are built on the pass, with decent running games, raising the chances for a shoot-out, something that this rivalry isn't accustomed to seeing. This will also be the first time we get to see if the Vandy connection for the Bears will pay off. I think it will, at least with Cutler and Bennett playing together again. Thanks to Deckfight's article, I ended up drafting Bennett on both of my fantasy teams. Here's hoping I didn't waste the pick. Bears 28- Packers 24. Miss LCG: The Packers have the better defense, the better receivers, and home-field advantage. Packers 30-Bears 21.
Monday's Games
+11 Bills vs. Patriots @ 7:00 on ESPN: Langston: New England has beaten Buffalo 11 straight and 16 of 17, including 38-7 and 56-10 back in 2007. Tom Brady is back. The Bills fired their OC about a week ago and they cut their starting LT that was supposed to replace their former Pro-Bowl LT. Oh yeah, no Marshawn Lynch. Add all of that together and you a get a no-brainer. Pats 42- Bills 28. Miss LCG: I'm sold. Patriots roll 38-Bills 14.
-9.5 Chargers vs. Raiders @ 10:15 on ESPN:
Langston:I don't know why the NFL keeps scheduling the Raiders in season openers. The past two times they played on Monday Night Football, they were embarrassed. Even with Seymour helping out on defense, I don't see too much changing. Plus, I'm trying this new thing out, where I think the Raiders will lose every game they play, which gives me the opportunity to be surprised if they do win and emotionally unchanged when they lose. Chargers 35-Raiders10
Miss LCG: As the girlfriend, it's hard to pick against Langston's teams, but the Lakers already won a championship this year and the Dodgers are probably headed to the playoffs for a second straight season; so he needs a bad team in his life. Plus, the Raiders have a lot of chinks in their armor. Chargers 20- Raiders 7
Thanks to Teach I got hooked to "The Wire," he had been talking up the series for what seemed like decades. He repeatedly used clips of the show in posts for comparative reason, but in hindsight, he probably used the clips to spread his love of the show. His praise for its greatness had piqued my interest, so I finally caved and followed his advice by going to I-Tunes and downloading the entire series. From the first episode, Myself and the LCG were captivated in this work of art. We spent a month or so watching the show in weekend long marathon sessions, and sometime in February we had finally finished the full series of David Simon's view of Baltimore's inner workings. It left me wanting more of his raw and ugly viewpoint on this great land of ours, and thanks to HBO I had Generation Kill to watch next. There was only one season to catch up on, so it didn't take long. Yet once again I found myself completely enamored in his viewpoint on the invasion of Iraq and basically any story Simon wanted to tell me through his work.
That leads us to this week where I am left waiting for the next season, without much to look forward too in the world of television. That is until yesterday when Varietyannounced that Melissa Leo will join the cast of “Treme,” David Simon’s new HBO series that will focus on musicians in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Leo will play a civil rights lawyer alongside a couple of standouts from Simon’s “The Wire” ; Clarke Peters (Lester Freamon) and Wendell Pierce (Bunk Moreland). It also has Steve Zahn from the cinematic masterpiece that is "Saving Silverman." Filming of the new series begins sometime in April.
A New Orleans denizen for years, Simon has built the "Treme" premise around the city's cultural community of musicians and cooks, and he's agonized over the details that will animate its characters and stories........
In an inspired bit of quirky casting, Simon has hired Phyllis Montana LeBlanc to act in the series. So memorable in Spike Lee's Hurricane Katrina documentary for HBO, "When the Levees Broke," LeBlanc is the author of 2008's "Not Just the Levees Broke: My Story During and After Hurricane Katrina" for Atria Books
Simon said he "was transfixed by her" in the film.
Much like its predecessor the stories told in “Treme"will reach beyond the main characters to explore political corruption, the public housing controversy, the crippled criminal-justice system, clashes between police and MardiGras Indians, and the struggle to regain the tourism industry after the storm. Basically a post-Katrina history of New Orleans, and more than likely the best chance for another show to vie for the title of best series ever with "The Wire." Times Picayune: The 'Treme' pilot is worthy of New Orleans
+ 6.5 Arizona Cardinals (12-7) vs. Pittsburgh Steelers (14-4) @ 6:00 pm on NBC Sunday, Feb. 1st;
Langston: Over the past week or so I have been coming across lame youtube videos from fans of both the Cardinals and the Steelers. Most of these videos fall into one of the following categories; a) terrible b) embarrassing c) funny d) disturbing e) sacrilegious and in the rare occurrence f) all of the above. So with no rooting interest in this game, despite the ranking system I made pre-playoffs and a wanton need for Steeler fans to end up like this bama, I decided the rare video that made me laugh and supply me with nightmare fuel would make me root for the other team. So congratulations Cardinals fans, thanks to the following clip I have decided to pull for your team. But don't pat yourselves on the back, thank Captain Creepy from the sea lab.
Cardinals 28 Pittsburgh 24
LCG: All-around the Steelers are the better team; they have the playoff/Super Bowl experience, they have the better defense, the Dirt Nasty of kickers, and the core of their offense has played together for a while now. The Cardinals are an upstart team that seemed to be on the brink for the past four seasons, and now they have finally broken through in a big way. They are a true underdog in every sense of the word, the only thing they have over the Steelers in this game is Larry Fitzgerald and Kurt Warner. They are the last team anyone could have expected to be in the Super Bowl, but here they are warts and all. I haven't picked them to win one game all season long, making me one of thousands that continued to doubt them all the way up to their recent trip to Tampa. When the Redskins aren't on, I love to root for the scrappy underdog. But I haven't picked them all year. Its a tough choice but when it's all said and done I think the team from the city of Pittsburgh will be hoisting the Lombardi trophy for the sixth time. A good offense fills the seats while good defense fills the trophy case. Pittsburgh 17 Arizona 7.
Teach: The safe pick would be the Stillers. The franchise may be the class of the NFL, and they don't have a fanbase--they have a religious following. When Brady went down, I told a coworker of mine that her Stillers were now the team to beat, and they've been solid all year. They have a stingy defense, a solid running game, a Super Bowl winning quarterback, and a Super Bowl MVP at wide receiver, in Hines "57 ways to score" Ward, so I'm going with the Cardinals. I don't like safe. Safe is boring. Whenever Cards are involved, I like to lay it all on the line. Let it ride. Larry Fitzgerald is the best player in football right now, an Ace in the hole. Kurt Warner has as many rings as Big Ben, which means he's got a poker face, and Big Ben looks more like a ticking time bomb than a precision time piece. Seriously, he may be the second best quarterback on his team. Arizona wins 31-27, and Public Enemy leads the Super Bowl march:
"I'm countin' down to the day deservin'
Fittin' for a King I'm waitin' for the time when I can
get to Arizona."
We'll ignore Chuck D's thoughts on urinating all over the state because that was like a whole 18 years ago when their football team deserved to be urinated on. Do we give Obama or Whisenhunt credit for this change?
Berndon:
I really want to say that Arizona is going to win. I hate Pittsburgh. Not the city per se, as my bro is currently studying and living there. But I honestly get annoyed as shit with all the Pittsburgh fans around Fredrock. I don't like Big Ben. I don't like Hines Ward. I don't like Omar Epps(Mike Tomlin). I just think that they have much more big game experience and will be able to move the ball at will. Willie Parker has come back to provide the balance that they need. Look for him to break a big run or two, and even if Ward isn't at full speed, look for a big touchdown from Santonio Holmes. The D will put pressure on Warner, making the Warner-Larry Fitz combo less effective. Fitz and Boldin will still get numbers, but the Steelers will win, 31-14.
Drody: So as a new resident of Pittsburgh, I'm picking the Steelers to win. And instead of going into why they are gonna win, or defenses of any of that crap, I'll tell you why I want them to win. I want the Stillers to win, because this place will absolutely go insane. Pittsburgh is a place where schools are already delayed 2 hours on Monday, because of the Super Bowl, and now that the "kids will be up late" and don't want attendance down. It is a place where the mayor of the city changes his name from Ravenstahl to "Steelerstahl" because the Steelers are playing the Ravens, and doesn't want to be labeled as a Ravens fan. Every friday, all workplaces allow black and gold and Steeler jerseys as proper dress. I went into a bagel shop this morning, they had black and gold bagels for sale. These people don't root for their team like the rest of the country. They live and breath black and gold. So, here's to the Steelers winning the big one, because honestly, I don't know if I want to see how this city would react to a loss, especially to Arizona. Steelers win 24-17.
-4 Philadelphia Eagles (9-6-1 overall, 3-4-1 road) @ Arizona Cardinals (9-7 overall, 6-2 home) at 3:00 p.m. on Fox : Langston's Pick: The Eagles and Cardinals are on a magical postseason ride, one team resembled a bird lost on its way south for winter and the other has been lost for the past 60 years. Yet both teams found their way back on track with the rest of the playoff flock with great offense and enough defense. But which team will make it to the south before the cold hits and which one will get lost and decide to fly back home only to fight the frigid temperatures waiting to try the flight next year? With McNabb and Warner throwing the pigskin and fantastic skill players like Brian Westbrook and Larry Fitzgerald, these two teams have the talent needed to play for Lombardi's trophy. Both teams are skilled enough on defense to let their offenses win the game, but the Eagles are more equipped for their defense to win the game. If I was betting smartly, I put it all on the Eagles. But who wants to see a battle of the keystone state? I sure don't, I like my championships to be all encompassing of this great nation of ours. That is why I am picking Kurt and Larry to win this game for the Grand Canyon state and the Arizona Cardinals. LCG's Pick: I cannot abandon my second team, the Philadelphia Eagles, this far into the playoff race. Sure it's easy to root for a team whose lone championship came in Chicago sometime around the great depression and the new deal. But these are the Eagles we are talking about. And I think it's time a city other than Boston has multiple champions. Philly has a chance at being the new dynasty city, and it could be a wonderful thing. Especially if some of their championship mojo rubs off on DC.
+6 Baltimore Ravens (11-5 overall, 5-3 road) @ Pittsburgh Steelers (12-4 overall, 6-2 home) at 6:30 p.m. on CBS: Langston's Pick: The best rivalry in the NFL will always be the Cowboys and the Redskins, but the Ravens and the Steelers have been giving them a run for their money the past couple years now. With both teams boasting great defenses, great running games, and now both teams being led by two great young quarterbacks; this rivalry has gotten even better. I don't have a rooting interest in this game, but according to my playoff rooting system the Steelers are my team now. They are playing at home, have the best defense in the league, and have Roethlisberger. I like the Steelers to win this game, but the Ravens are talented enough to keep it close enough where this will be the greatest game of the postseason the Steelers won't cover. LCG's Pick: I like underdogs and a team with a rookie quarterback headed into the Steel city that already has 5 Super Bowl trophy's is probably as close to the definition as we are going to get for quite some time. I like the Ravens to win this game, encouraging Pittsburghs mayor to change his name back as soon as possible. Jump on the bandwagon Steelerstahl, its the Ravens year for triumph in the AFC.
+3 Baltimore Ravens (11-5 overall, 5-3 road) @ Tennessee Titans (13-3 overall, 7-1 home) 4:30 p.m. on CBS:Langston's Pick: These two teams boast great running games and even better defenses, and the last time they played it turned out to be a fantastic one with the Titans edging the Ravens out 13-10. With these teams so even in almost every aspect of the game, I like veteran QB Kerry Collins to hold the edge for Tennessee. He will win the game by avoiding the costly mistakes that Bert Flaccowill surely run into. The extra rest coming from the bye week for Haynesworth and the rest of the banged up defense will pay huge dividends for the Titans helping them win this game by 6. LCG's Pick: I have respect for both teams and would be happy to see either one win. However I am going with Baltimore on this one. They have a lot of momentum going into this game and have played strong for the better half of the season. I am looking forward to the defensive match up. The Titans may have the rest provided by a bye week on their side but the Ravens are coming into this game with the focus needed to win a a playoff game.
+9.5 Arizona Cardinals (9-7 overall, 3-5 road) @ Carolina Panthers (12-4 overall, 8-0 home) 8:15 p.m. on Fox: Langston's Pick: The Cardinals stink on the road and the Panthers own at home. The home field advantage coupled with the weather expected in Charlotte and their great running back combo, should vault the Panthers to the NFC championship. I like the Panthers to win, but zippy chance they cover. LCG's Pick: I have yet to pick the Cardinals to win a game this season. For the most part they have proven me wrong but lets hope this time around it goes differently. I am going with the Panthers, regardless of my hatred for the sound effects played at their games. I have little invested in either team but am fully aware that Carolina is a creep team. They often go without notice to most NFL fans. I think it would be nice to see them come out of this seaon with their name fully imprinted on the minds of football fans.
Sunday's games:
+4 Philadelphia Eagles (9-6-1 overall, 3-4-1 road) @ New York Giants (12-4 overall, 7-1 home) 1:00 p.m. on Fox: Langston's Pick: The Eagles have been rolling as of late, winning 5 out of their last six. While the Giants cooled off late in the season due to injuries, gunshots, and a need for rest. Of those 5 wins, included was a win in the Meadowlands over the Giants where the Eagles took the game 20-16. That game could be a sign of whats next, but Brandon Jacobs says he is healthy. These teams match-up fairly well, but when Brandon Jacobs is healthy there isn't a harder team to defend. He punishes the defense with his power and speed and by the end of the first half the opposition is slow and tired. Expect Jacobs to do his damage in the first half with the rest of the Giants offense picking up the slack and putting the Eagles to bed. Giants by 10. LCG's Pick: I am going with Philadelphia. The Giants got there Cinderella story last year. I feel like it is the Eagles turn to find their missing glass slipper.
+6 San Diego Chargers (8-8 overall, 3-5 road) @ Pittsburgh Steelers (12-4 overall, 6-2 home) 4:45 p.m. on CBS:Langston's Pick: I hate to pick against the Steelers, considering they have Ben Roethlisberger and the best defense in the league. But with the lack of protection for the Steelers and speedy Darren Sproles emerging, I like the Chargers in this one. It's not all due to Sproles emergence/LT's injury though, Rivers has turned into the most consistent passer in the league. The fact that he throws one of the ugliest long balls, that seem to float in the air longer than a Nerf ball in a game of 500, boggles my mind that every deep ball isn't picked off. Along with his ugly deep balls he possesses the most irksome personality in the league. Its a shame because the man can play and is likely to lead the Chargers over the hump and to the Super Bowl. Chargers by 2. LCG's Pick: I don't like either team but respect the Steelers more. I am going with the Steelers.
-2 Atlanta Falcons (11-5 overall, 4-4 road) @ Arizona Cardinals (9-7 overall, 6-2 home) - 4:30 on NBC:Langston's Pick: The Cardinals are 3-7 against non-NFC West opponets, and have been crushed in three of the their last five games. The Cardinals haven't beat a team outside of their division since week 6, when they beat the Cowboys 30-24. This obviously doesn't bode well for a team headed into the playoffs for the first time in years. I like rookie of the year Matt Ryan and the Falcons to take this game, setting up a NFC South rivalry game in the divisional round against the Panthers. LCG's Pick: I'm going with the Falcons. I have mad love for Atlanta and any other team that makes me believe they are playing for more then a massive paycheck. This team has really come together this season and they are an underdog I enjoy rooting for. Falcons cover.
-1 Indianapolis Colts (12-4 overall, 6-2 road) @ San Diego Chargers(8-8 overall, 5-3 home) - 8:00 on NBC:Langston's Pick: With a quick glance at the Chargers schedule you can quickly notice that their last win over a quality opponent came in week 6 against the Patriots. The winning streak that helped propel them into the playoffs consisted of wins against bad or sinking teams. However they did lose a lot of close games to quality opponents; 11-10 to the Steelers, 23-20 to the Colts, 22-16 to the Falcons. Just by looking at who they have beat and who they've lost to, you can figure that this game will be close and the Chargers will fall short yet again . Colts by 3.LCG's Pick: I love me some Pey-Pey. I enjoy the idea of the Colts. I loathe the Chargers and their lack of appreciation for football aesthetics. Any team named after a credit card company deserves zippy respect.
Sundays games
-3.5 Baltimore Ravens (11-5 overall, 5-3 road) @ Miami Dolphins (11-5 overall, 5-3 home) - 1:00 on CBS: Langston's Pick: The Dolphins are easily the surprise team of the year, going from worst in the league to the playoffs. But what seems to be ignored is that they should be thanking the team that 1-15 for their record. When a team has a strong season, they get a tougher schedule and when they have a bad season the following seasons schedule is made weaker. This was the case for this years Dolphins, who took advantage of a weak schedule going 7-0 against lesser opponents. But against stronger opponents they struggled, going 4-5 against teams with a .500 winning percentage or higher. When they played the Ravens in week 7, they were dominated 27-13. Pennington is a great quarterback and I'm glad they used the wildcat offense from Arkansas, but I don't see them winning this game. The Ravens are a better in almost every facet of the game. The only edge (apart from home field advantage) I would give the Dolphins is at quarterback, and thats debatable. Ravens by 7. LCG's Pick: Last night was a sleepless one for me. I found myself spellbound by the first 5 episodes of The Wire. For this reason alone I am going with Baltimore. They have an amazing defense and have no problems with getting gritty when they play. I think I can stomach a year or two of Ravens fans screaming I'M WACCO FOR FLACCO! I appreciate Miami's comeback this season, but thanks to Ace Ventura Pet Detective I have been scarred for life and just can't bring myself to pull for them.
-3 Philadelphia Eagles (9-6-1 overall, 3-4-1 road) @ Minnesota Vikings (10-6 overall, 6-2 home) - 4:30 on Fox:Langston's Pick: The way the Eagles ended the season with a 4-1 record was impressive, that is until you look at who they faced. They crushed the Cardinals, who is easily the worst team in the playoffs. They beat the Giants, minus Brandon Jacobs and knee deep in drama considering it was just a week after the Plaxico fiasco. They beat the Browns, who are the Browns. They lost to a struggling Redskins team and they finished the season off by beating a dysfunctional, injured and overrated Cowboys team. The last time the Eagles were tested by a good team with no drama, they got crushed 36-7. Don't believe the hype. Vikings to win by 10.LCG's Pick: I would go for the Vikings but I just have too much respect for the Eagles. I want Philadelphia to prove their critics wrong for once. I want the city of Philadelphia to join the ranks of LA, Boston, New York, and Chicago as a juggernaut of a sports city. I hate the thought of anyone thinking Philly is all bark and no bite.
+3 Chicago Bears (9-6) @ Houston Texans (7-8):Langston's Pick: The Bears need to win to keep their playoff chances alive while the Texans are playing for respect, contract incentives and jobs. Houston has been playing consistent football all season long, and their record is a product of being in one of the toughest divisions in football. I like Steve Slaton and the Texans to vault the Vikings to the playoffs with a win. Texans by 6. LCG's Pick: Bears. However I believe Houston will play hard, just not as hard as the team from the Windy City.
+7 New York Giants (12-3) @ Minnesota Vikings (9-6):Langston's Pick: The Giants will be doing their best to rest up for the playoffs, while the Vikings have their eyes set on the playoffs. I like Adrien Peterson and the Vikings defense to carry this team into January. Vikings by 3. LCG's Pick: No Plax + rest + nothing to prove + annoying amounts of drama= loss, Vikings by 6.
-6 New England Patriots (10-5) @ Buffalo Bills (7-8):Langston's Pick: I would really like to see the Patriots lose, but I don't see it happening. The Bills are just too inconsistent and cannot match the level of talent the Pats wield. New England by 10. LCG's Pick: Buffalo makes me uncomfortable. The Pats leave me disheartened. I would like to see the Patriots blow their shot at the playoffs before NY and Miami decide their fate, but the Bills don't have the talent to pull off this upset. Patriots by 7.
+3 Miami Dolphins (10-5) @ New York Jets (9-6):Langston's Pick: The Jets should have already locked up a playoff spot, but they struggle mightily on the west coast. The Dolphins are one of the surprise teams in the league, going from 1-15 to playoff contenders. The story in Miami is a great one, but their season ends here. The Jets are dynamite at home and should roll over the Dolphins in the Meadowlands. Jets by 7. LCG's Pick: Dolphins are my pick. I understand picking the Jets but Miami just speaks out to me.
+1 Dallas Cowboys (9-6) @ Philadelphia Eagles (8-6-1):Langston's Pick: The Cowboys are the more talented team. The Eagles are the better team. However if the better team always won, watching football wouldn't be as much fun as it is. I like the Cowboys to take this game and their malfunctioning attitudes to the playoffs, where they can implode in front of the entire nation. LCG's Pick: I hope that the Eagles make it to the Super Bowl, but they need a win and a whole lot of help just to make it into January. Dallas is kind of bs. Any time these teams go against each other no matter what season, I feel inclined to take Philadelphia every time.
+8 Denver Broncos (8-7) @ San Diego Chargers (7-8):Langston's Pick: Earlier in the season the Broncos needed a bogus call to beat the Chargers. Tomorrow, they will be lucky if the bad calls will even matter. Rivers is on a mission to take his douchey attitude and his team to the playoffs, and with the way he is playing I wouldn't bet against him. Chargers by 6. LCG's Pick: I like the Chargers to take the game and the AFC West. Denver has been doing their best to blow this season, and they give me no reason to believe tomorrow night will be any different.
+4.5 Baltimore Ravens (9-5) @ Dallas Cowboys (9-5) Saturday on NFLN 8:15:Langston's Pick: The Ravens are coming off of a tough-luck game against the Steelers, where the battle of defenses and a bad call went in Pittsburgh favor. The Cowboys are coming off of a great win over the NFC leading Giants, where they shut down New York's offense and sacked Eli 8 times. Both teams enter this game desperately seeking a win to stay in the wildcard race, with the winner taking a step towards the playoffs and the loser making vacation plans. I like the Cowboys pass-rush, the celebration of the final game at Texas Stadium, and rookie QB Joe Flacco to combine for a Dallas win. Boys by 6. LCG's Pick: I think the Cowboys will be unfocused due to the celebration, and the Ravens will be locked in and ready to pounce. Baltimore has been crushing it for the better part of the season, and I like them to continue that tonight. Romo and the Cowboys seem to rise to the occasion when their doubted, and fail when their expected to achieve. Ravens by 3.
-2 Pittsburgh Steelers (11-3) @ Tennessee Titans (12-2):Langston's Pick: No Haynesworth, no Vanden Bosch, no win for the Titans. I like the Steelers to win this 1:00 matchup between the two AFC powers. Pittsburgh by 6. LCG's Pick: The Titans are content with winning the AFC South and are now resting up, while the Steelers seem like they are out for blood every single game. I like the Steelers to continue that mode of play, as resting up for the playoffs rarely ever helps you win these late season matchups.
+3.5 Atlanta Falcons (9-5) @ Minnesota Vikings (9-5):Langston's Pick: This should be a great game to watch, as both teams are in the thick of the playoff race with two of the more explosive backs of the NFL in Michael "The Burner" Turner and Adrian "Purple Jesus" Peterson. Peterson is hobbled yet on a mission, his MVP caliber play should carry the Vikings to the victory and the playoffs. LCG's Pick: Peterson isn't healthy, Tarvaris is still starting, and the Falcons are curiously injury free. I like the Falcons and Michael Turner to run all over the Metrodome to a win.
+3 Carolina Panthers (11-3) @ New York Giants (11-3) Sunday on NBC 8:15:Langston's Pick: We learned the Giants aren't the same without Brandon Jacobs putting punishment on the defense. Jacobs is not 100%, and the Giants will be forced to give a bulk of the carries to Ward and Bradshaw. Yet I like Eli to step his game up and carry the Giants to a victory through the air. LCG's Pick: The Giants are a more talented team, and even though they are dealing with a mountain of issues I like them to beat the Panthers on Sunday night. Eli will have a huge game in a recovery of the disaster in Dallas. Giants by 6.
+4 Green Bay Packers (5-9) @ Chicago Bears (8-6) Monday on ESPN 8:30:Langston's Pick: It's too bad games don't last 30 minutes, if that was the case the Packers may by 14-0. They blow games they appear to have in the win column. One of the main factors is the injury plagued defense just seems to wear down at the worst possible time, and let go of the game late. For that reason I like the Bears to take this win. But it will be a good one, as this rivalry always supplies great football. LCG's Pick: I like the Bears to win this game, the Packers have played great considering their record but just seem to always come up short. This game will not be any different. Bears by 8.
+3 Tampa Bay Buccaneers @ Atlanta Falcons: Langston's Pick: After the whooping the Bucs took on the road from the Panthers I expect them to come in and play with more intensity against the Falcons. Its just too bad none of the NFC South teams ever lose at home. I like the Falcons to win this game due to the newly found home field advantage at the Georgia Dome. The win will put them in control of their playoff fate going into week 16.LCG's Pick: Falcons at home, you can almost automatically tally another one for the ATL in the win column.
+2.5 Pittsburgh Steelers @ Baltimore Ravens:Langston's Pick: The Ravens are coming off of a great victory over the Redskins, where they controlled every facet of the game. However they were playing the Redskins who have just fallen apart in the second half of the season. While the Steelers beat the Cowboys, another team who is managing to fall apart despite a talent filled roster, with an amazing comeback. These two teams mirror each other; they both have great defenses, power running games, and a great play-action passing game. This has the chance to be one of the best games of the year, it is a fierce rivalry between two teams that absolutely despise each other. This game could go either way but I like the Steelers to win, leading them to another division title and another trip to the playoffs.LCG's Pick: Pittsburgh are the Ravens in two seasons, talented and overwhelming. Steelers by 6.
+3 Minnesota Vikings @ Arizona Cardinals:Langston's Pick: The Vikings have a slim lead in the Norris and the Cardinals have already clinched their first division crown since 1949. Both teams are talented on both sides of the ball, but one has Tarvaris Jackson slinging the rock and the other has two-time MVP Kurt Warner leading the O. Kurt Warner will take care of the ball and do his damage through the air, while Tarvaris will do his best not to lose the game for Purple Jesus and the rest of the Vikes. That being said, I have absolutely no trust in Tarvaris as a starting QB. The only way he can change this game, is negatively. Cardinals win by 7, setting up a two-way tie at the top of the Norris.LCG's Pick: Tarvaris more like Barvaris (terribly vague Simspons reference). Cardinals by 5.
+3 New York Giants @ Dallas Cowboys, Sunday Night on NBC:Langston's Pick:The Giants looked uninspired against the Eagles last week and the Cowboys threw up all over themselves, blowing a 10 point lead against the Steelers. To be honest I have went back and forth on this game about 4 times due to the following factors; the Giants will be without their measty playmaker Brandon Jacobs while the Cowboys are in the middle of a meltdown. The Cowboys rarely, if ever, lose in the Big D. While the Giants rarely lose. T.O. is complaining, while Plax is plea bargaining. With all that being said I settled on the Giants. The deciding factor; Romo has something Eli doesn't, an innate ability to make his dumbest throws at the worst possible time. Giants win by 4. By the way, the countdown to the Cowboys implosion has already started .. 10.. 9...8..7....LCG's Pick: He may not be Pey Pey, but Eli can sure sling the rock. Giants by 6. I can't wait until this fiasco in Dallas really get started.
+14 Cleveland Browns @ Philadelphia Eagles, Monday Night on ESPN:Langston's Pick: This is another MNF game that looked great in August. Its too bad for Romeo that his team just fell apart(physically and mentally) this year. Hopefully he gets another job, I think he has the ability to be a great head coach. Oh well. Eagles will cruise in this game, keeping their playoff hopes alive for at least one more week.LCG's Pick: The Browns are free from a QB controversy and for the first time in history that will be a negative thing. Eagles cover easily.
+3 Atlanta Falcons(8-4) @ New Orleans Saints (6-6): Langston's Pick: The Falcons have continued to succeed expectations while the Saints have been consistently inconsistent. The Falcons have had a tough time on the road en route to a 3-3 record and the Saints are almost unbeatable in the NOLA with a 5-1 record. I like the Saints and their number one ranked offense to tear apart the Falcons and their 22nd ranked pass defense. Saints by 7. LCG's Pick: I doubted the Falcons for most of the season, yet they keep proving me wrong. Matt Ryan has made me a believer. The Falcons rookie QB, Roddy White, and Michael "The Burner" Turner will have a big day against the suspension filled Saints. Falcons by 8.
+1 Miami Dolphins (7-5) @ Buffalo Bills (6-6) In Toronto:Langston's Pick: J.P. Losman is in at QB for the Bills because of injury to Trent Edwards. Meaning Lee Evans will have a huge day. But Losman will undoubtedly throw a costly interception late in the game. Allowing Chad Pennington and Ronnie Brown to lead the Phins to the victory over the sliding Bills. Dolphins by 3. LCG's Pick: The Dolphins don't amaze on offense, but they are terribly consistent. They don't make those head scratching mistakes that a lot of defenses live on. Which will be detrimental to the Bills on Sunday, since their QB JP Losman is turnover prone. I like the Dolphins and Ronnie Brown to control the clock and win this game by 7.
+3 Dallas Cowboys (8-4) @ Pittsburgh Steelers (9-3):Langston's Pick: For the past couple weeks the Steelers have played dominant smash mouth football. They also have looked like the class of the AFC. While the Cowboys have rebounded since Romo's return, I don't think they can hang in the cold confines of Heinz field. I like the Steelers to pound the Cowboys into submission. Steelers by 10. LCG's Pick: The Steelers have the better defense, home field advantage, and Ben Roethlisberger. Steelers by 7.
+5.5 Washington Redskins(7-5) @ Baltimore Ravens (8-4):Langston's Pick:Much like the Falcons the Ravens have played beyond expectations this season, due in large part to a rookie QB. Flacco locks in on Derek Mason far too often and I expect that to lead him to making a couple big mistakes in this Sunday night game. I like Jason Campbell to take this game over through the air, helping to lead his team to the win with a late field goal. The win should vault the Redskins right back into the playoff race with just three weeks left to play. Redskins win the Beltway Battle by 2. LCG's Pick: Everyone knows who I am going to pick. So I figured I would take this moment to share this Sean Taylor tribute song presented by 93.9 WKYS. It features some of DC areas better known rap, R&B, and Go-Go artists; most notably Wale and Big G of the Backyard Band.
Go Skins!!
+3 Tampa Bay Buccaneers (9-3) @ Carolina Panthers (9-3): Langston's Pick: Both teams are well balanced on offense and defense, making this game a toss up. I expect the home field advantage to be the factor in this game. RAWR..... Panthers by 4. LCG's Pick: Langston has it right, this game is a toss up. So I flipped a coin and Tampa Bay won. Bucs by 7.
-11 Tennessee Titans(10-1) @ Detroit Lions (0-11) 12:30 ET: Langston's Pick: The Lions have played better football with Culpeper at the helm, but there defense still folds like a lawn chair. The Lions should come out ready and roaring to put on a show for the nation, as they usually play much better football on Thanksgiving. Calvin Johnson will be the one to keep an eye on for the Lions. He is as steady as they come and is always a treat to watch. Its just to bad there playing the newly humbled Titans. Jeff Fisher should have his squad refocused and ready to roll. Haynesworth and the defense will be angry and ready to crush Daunte and the Lions offense. Lendale White and Chris Johnson will put on a show while running all over the Lions and Ford Field. I like Titans to win in a big way. LCG's Pick: The fact that the Lions have to play the Titans on their big day shows you how much luck this franchise has. I like the Titans to win, but be wary of the spread.
+12 Seattle Seahawks (2-9) @ Dallas Cowboys (7-4) 4:15 ET: Langston's Pick: If there ever was a sure bet in the NFL, it would be the Cowboys and Tony Romo to win on Thanksgiving. The two games Romo has led the 'Boys on turkey day, they have outscored their opponents (Bucs & Jets) 72-13. I like the Cowboys to continue the trend by crushing the Seahawks. LCG's Pick: The Seahawks are a disaster, and it must be due to the departure of Zorn star. All kidding aside, the Cowboys will roll in this one.
+3 Arizona Cardinals (7-4) @ Philadelphia Eagles (5-5-1) 8:15 ET: Langston's Pick: I like the Eagles to win this, due to the fact that the Cardinals will be dealing with a cross country flight and short rest. Philly DC Jim Johnson will bring the heat all day, McNabb will lead the Eagles to the win over the tired Cardinals through the air (in what may be his last start as an Iggle), I will most likely be in a tryptophan induced coma by the 2nd half, and the Cardinals may have to wait one more week to be crowned division champs. LCG's Pick: I would love to pick the Eagles, they are in fact my secret reserve team, but the Cardinals are the better team. I like the Cardinals to win this game, but this will be the game to watch today. So if you take a turkey nap, make sure to wake up for this one. This should help put more of a shine to the finish that is Kurt Warner's MVP campaign.
+5.5 New York Jets(7-3) @ Tennessee Titans(10-0):Langston's Pick: I am still not sold on the Jets, but then again the only time I have watched them this season is when they lost to the Raiders in overtime. Which was quite possibly the ugliest NFL game of all-time. Plus I can't pick against the Titans, I really want to see that undefeated-winless match-up on Thanksgiving day. I could see the Jets winning this, but the Titans have a slight edge in almost every fact of the game. Titans win but don't cover. LCG's Pick: Titans by 7.
+1 Carolina Panthers(8-2) @ Atlanta Falcons(6-4):Langston's Pick: This will be a good if not great game. The Panthers have owned this match-up of late, winning 3 out of the last 4 which included a 24-9 win in September. This isn't the same Falcons team, but the Panthers beat them handily without Steve Smith and I don't see any reason why that would change on Sunday. Panthers by 3. LCG's Pick: The Falcons have finally come back together after the trials and tribulations of 2006-2007. I can admire a team when they find it in themselves to overcome adversity by rising from the depths of despair. It is a great show of human spirit, Falcons by 3.
-3 New York Giants(9-1) @ Arizona Cardinals(7-3): Langston's Pick: The Giants look like a Super Bowl lock at this point, but I really like Kurt Warner getting his revenge in this game. Cardinals with the upset win over the Giants, as they get ever so close to clinching the division. LCG's Pick: TheGiants are rolling and Warner isn't getting his revenge any time soon. As I can't see a team that barely survives against the Niners beating the defending Super Bowl champs. Giants by 7.
+3 Indianapolis Colts(6-4) @ San Diego Chargers(4-6):Langston's Pick:I like the Colts to beat the Chargers on Sunday night. Peyton rarely loses games in November and the Chargers look like a totally different team with Merriman out and LT on the decline. Colts by 3. LCG's Pick: Colts, Pey-Pey keeps his teams playoffs hopes alive.
+3 Green Bay Packers(5-5) @ New Orleans Saints(5-5):Langston's Pick: The Saints play terrific in home night games, but Drew Brees seems to be the only Saint bringing it consistently week to week. I like the Packers to win this game by 2, and keep their chances at winning the Norris alive. LCG's Pick: The Saints play good at home, and this could be the moment we see the Saints come back to life. Saints by 6.
+7 Baltimore Ravens (6-3) @ New York Giants(8-1) :Langston's Pick: The Ravens and Joe Flacco have been playing above and beyond expectations, but I don't see them being able to stop the fantastic pass rush of the Giants. The Ravens defense is still as tough as ever, but the Giants have one of the most balanced offensive attacks in the League. The Giants win by 8. LCG's Pick: Baltimore is a tough team and as Langston said they have been playing good, but the Giants will take the win by 7. But don't be surprised if the Ravens make this interesting.
+3.5 Chicago Bears (5-4) @ Green Bay Packers (4-5):Langston's Pick: Over the years this has always been a great game to watch, and it won't be any different this year. I think the Packers win this, but I don't see them covering. With a field goal to end the game, the Packers win by 2. LCG's Pick: I see it going the exact opposite way, with the Bears taking this one down. The Packers have been playing tough all season, but have become more susceptible to blowing the game late. The Bears have their own issues, but they have gelled as team in recent weeks. I see the Bears taking this with a game winning field goal
+4 Minnesota Vikings(5-4) @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers (6-3):Langston's Pick: Adrian Peterson played his heart out against the Packers, and seems to be hitting his stride. I see him running all over Tampa this week. Taking the Vikes to their 6th win of the season, putting them in a great position to take the division. LCG's Pick: I got the Buccaneers to cover. There defense is tough, and unlike the Vikings, they actually believe in their quarterback.
-1.5 Dallas Cowboys (5-4) @ Washington Redskins (6-3):Langston's Pick: In case any of you were wondering, I made the photo of the Redskins number one fan, Chief Zee, because its Skins-Boys week. If you have never been to Virginia , it is the biggest game of the year. It doesn't matter what the two teams records are, its always a huge game, it just so happens that this years game will have major playoff implications. With the winner being set up to compete for a Wild-Card birth and the loser sinking to the bottom of the NFC East. Everything seems to be going in the Cowboys favor; Portis is out, Romo is back, and Witten is back. For that very reason I am picking the Redskins to win this game by 2. This a hopeful guess, as I want the Cowboys to implode. I believe with a loss at Washington, the possibility of that happening is greatly increased. LCG's Pick: HAIL!!!
+5 Cleveland Browns (3-6) @ Buffalo Bills (5-4):Langston's Pick: Brady Quinn was epic in his first game, and I hope to see the Browns open it up a little bit to see what he's got. The Bills are slowly falling apart, week by week. After a fantastic start of 4-0 , they have fallen in four out of their last five games. I like the Browns to win by 6. LCG's Pick: Cleveland has a little bit of momentum, the Bills have absolutely none. Browns win.
+ 2.5 Green Bay Packers (4-4) @ Minnesota Vikings (4-4):
Langston's Pick: The Vikings play better football at home, defending their turf to a record of 3-1. The Packers have been playing great offense, but until the defense brings some consistency I don't see them becoming a weekly threat. I will take the Vikes and Purple Jesus by 6. LCGs Pick: I am going with the Packers. They played a great game against the Titans last week and have continually proven there is life after Brett. They are really starting to come together and I don't feel the Vikings will pose much of a threat. Packers by 3.
+ 3.5 Indianapolis Colts (4-4) @ Pittsburgh Steelers (6-2):
Langston's Pick: The Steelers are coming off a huge win in Washington while the Colts survived against the Patriots to bring their record back to .500. I think this game will be competitive but the Steelers and Dick Lebeau's defense will be too much for the Colts. Steelers by 10. LCGs Pick: I have to admit that I am pretty bitter that the Steelers spanked the Redskins on Monday. However I will pick them over Indy. As much as I love Pey-Pey Manning the Steelers are starting to bring it. I will say this, it will be an interesting game and I don't see Indy going down without a fight. The Steelers will have to truly earn this win.
+ 3 New York Giants (7-1) @ Philadelphia Eagles (5-3):
Langston's Pick: I hate to do this after stumping for McNabb earlier today, but the Giants will win this going away. The Eagles haven't beat anyone other than Pittsburgh this season and I don't see that changing this week. Giants by 3. LCGs Pick: Fly Eagles Fly. I have always and will forever be a huge Skins fan. But I can't help but share some admiration with our rivals to the north, the Eagles. They have always been my back pocket team. Over the years I have noticed that the Eagles, as well as Philadelphia, are full of surprises. This game will either be a great win or a sour loss. Either way it will be a good game. Eagles by 6.
+9.5 San Fransisco 49ers (2-6) @ Arizona Cardinals (5-3):
Langston's Pick: Frank Gore and Tim Hightower will make this game worth watching. Hightower, a rookie out of the University of Richmond has shown he has the ability to strive in the NFL. Gore has become one of the better backs in the NFL, he runs with power and can do damage as a receiver out of the backfield. This game also gives us an opportunity to watch Patrick Willis, one of the best young linebackers in the league. I see the Cardinals winning, but they won't cover. Cards by 7. LCGs Pick: I don't have much to say on this game other than the Cardinals will beat the Niners. Bet the Cards to cover.
Upset specials:
Langston's upset of the week: -6.5 Jacksonville Jaguars (3-5) @ Detroit Lions (0-8)
I got the Lions winning their first game of the season by defending their home turf against the Jaguars. Hey even a blind squirrel finds a nut every now and again. Lions will win this game, moving them into a heated race with the Bengals for the top pick in this years draft.
LCGs upset of the week: -3 Tennessee Titans (8-0) @ Chicago Bears (5-3)
I got Da Bears beating the Titans by 3. While the Titans are good, their play-book is played out. The Bears are going to force the Titans to throw the ball. Its time for the Titans to show some new tricks and I'm not sure it will work against the Bears. The Bears are coming off a of a huge come back over the Vikings and have some great momentum coming into this game.
Here at LCB HQ we have had a lot of emails from some football fans and degenerate gamblers out there, asking for our thoughts on the weekly games. So I have finally given in and now I am here to help you with your local bookie. So here are the picks that I and the LCG made this week.
+8.5 Dallas 5-3 (Road: 2-2) @ NY Giants 6-1 (Home: 4-0):Langston's Pick:There is a reason the Giants are getting 8.5 points, the Cowboys are not very good. They are without Romo, possibly Witten, and most of their defensive backs. On the opposite end of the spectrum the Giants look like the best team in the league. Don't expect much to change, Giants win big over the Boys at the Meadowlands. LCGs pick: The Cowboys understand that they need to win this game in order to stay in playoff contention. Expect the Boys to come out blazing and upset the division leading Giants.
-3 Atlanta 4-3 (Road: 1-3) @ Oakland 2-5 (Home: 1-2):Langston's Pick: Next week the Falcons have to play division rival New Orleans in a game that could help decide the NFC South. For that reason I am picking the Raiders. I see the Falcons looking past the Raiders and see them losing this game by 3. LCGs pick: I have faith that the Raiders will win at home.
+1.5 Baltimore 4-3 (Road: 1-2) @ Cleveland 3-4 (Home: 1-2): Langston's pick: Jamal Lewis will run well against his former mates, I am going with the Browns for the win but they won't cover in this field goal fest. Browns by 1.LCGs pick: This is the first and probably the last time I say anything positive about the city of Baltimore, they will win.
+4.5 Green Bay 4-3 (Road: 2-1) @ Tennessee 7-0 (Home: 4-0):Langston's pick: Aaron Rodgers just got a huge extension. With the job security in place and the opportunity to rest in last weeks bye, expect Rodgers and the Packers to outplay Kerry Collins and the short rested Titans. Packers will beat the spread. LCGs pick: The plight of Packer fans continue, Tennessee wins big.
+6 New England 5-2 (Road: 2-1) @ Indianapolis 3-4 (Home: 1-2):Langston's pick: The Colts and Patriots both look like different teams this season. The Pats have a good reason with Brady being out, while their is really no excuse for the Colts. I expect to see the Colts to keep their playoff hopes alive with a 10 point win over Cassell and the Pats. LCGs pick: Colts are stronger in almost every facet of the game, Colts win big.
+2 Pittsburgh 5-2 (Road: 3-1) @ Washington 6-2 (Home: 3-1) TV: Langston's pick: The Redskins have looked rough the past 3 weeks, with a loss to the Rams and two near losses to the Browns and Lions. I expect them to get it back on track on Monday night, surprising the Steelers with a 10 point win. LCGs pick: No pick here, but I can't wait for this game. I will be on the edge of my seat for the entire game and hopefully the Skins will make it out on top. This is the game of the week.
10, as in 10 runs given up by Nationals pitcher Jason Bergmann before he was taken out by manager Manny Acta. Included in those runs was a home run to left field in the top of the second by Fernando Tatis and a shot from Daniel Murphy in the top of the third. As Bergmann was getting lit up, there was no one warming up in the bullpen. The only reliever who got up during the inning was right-hander Garrett Mock, but he did it just to stretch. Besides, he is not available to pitch until Thursday. On the other hand, John Maine made it look easy pitching against the Nationals. Making his first start since July 28; he allowed one hit in five innings, struck out six and walked four. Brian Stokes pitched the final four innings to complete the four-hitter and get his first save. The final score Mets twelve to the Nationals zero.
Myself, Ms. LCG, Teach, Stan Yuengling, Bill, and Nancy were in attendance for the gem that Bergmann pitched. It was the biggest blowout I had ever attended and I still had a fantastic time. But who could have a bad time with good friends, a cold beer, a delicious ben's half smoke, and baseball?
Sharing your likes and dislikes is a part of being in any relationship. But when it comes to the sports you love, it can end up becoming a detractor and hurt the relationship. You may suck it up and go to Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and then expect her to stick out an entire nine inning game, fair is fair right? But how could she enjoy herself without knowing whats going on? She can't, there are only a few people out there that love baseball without understanding everything going on in the field of play. Well instead of trading off painful experiences, let her know why you love the game. With some help from my girlfriend I am going to let you know how I got my LCG to enjoy baseball almost as much as I do. The 9 steps, after the jump.
This is probably the most important step of all, don't talk down to her because she doesn't love or understand every thing about baseball. You will get nowhere and the rest of the steps will be deemed useless.
Don't barrage her with information, build it slowly. You didn't understand all the intricacies of baseball the first time you watched , so why would you expect her to understand it all right from the get-go?
Ask her why she doesn't love baseball, and listen. This will be very useful, as you can use that information to show her why she is misinformed. Ex., most women I have come across say it moves to slowly. So tell them that the action is in the inaction, and explain why. Maybe by showing them how the defense is shifted because the batter always pulls the ball.
Does your girlfriend enjoy history or politics? Thankfully mine does, so I explained to her how baseball and America will always be tied together. My information was based on my love for the Dodgers, so my history lessons were focused on them. First I told her how Jackie Robinsons' signing was the start of the battle for Civil Rights. Then I told her how the continental United States were not united as a people until the Dodgers and Giants moved out west.
Most woman don't understand all the possibilities of a single at bat, they believe its only three strikes and your out. But we all know it goes deeper than that. Show them how each pitch could change an entire game. Ex; I did this by playing catch with my girlfriend, showing her all of the different types of pitches there are. Showing her my curve ball, slider, and knuckle ball. With that she understood how a batter being paid millions could end up looking stupid due to a simple change up.
Watch a couple baseball movies with her. She may end up seeing why you have love for the game and get some appreciation for the game herself. My LCG had it all backwards, she loved baseball movies but not baseball. Not anymore. She always had admiration from her childhood watching The Sandlot, but I brought her to the bigs with The Natural. Try watching Field of Dreams, Eight Men Out, and Bang the Drum Slowly. If those don't work you can go to "For the Love of the Game", the quintessential baseball chick flick.
Two words, Vin Scully. The heart of the Dodgers will make anyone a baseball fan. His voice brings thoughts of what it was like to live in the fifties. His voice resonates with the game and makes you feel at home where ever you may be. His stories can make anyone a fan. I know for me when I watch a Dodger game without him, it seems incomplete.
Teach her how to keep score. Keeping score can bring you to closer to the game. Thankfully my LCG picked it up faster then some of my buddies. She now knows the difference between a 4-6-3 and a F7.
Make a date of it. Make her a dinner that revolves around the game, and couple that with her favorite cocktail. If she can see it as a plausible date, move on to the last step by bringing her to a game.
These steps can bring the two of you closer and will help build your relationship. If you follow all of these steps, she will become a fan. If not, she may understand you and your love for the game better. Helping you to enjoy the game in peace.
