LCB Picks: BCS National Championship
In Alabama, In BCS, In Deckfight, In Drody, In Langston, In NCAA, In Roll Tide, In SEC, In Teach, In Texas LonghornsJanuary 7, 2010
Teach: I firmly believe Alabama is the better team, and I firmly believe that after Thursday everyone will recognize that. I also believe that declaring them national champions is as frivolous as giving out an Oscar. In fact, the presentation of the Sears Trophy will probably look a lot like the moment when America fell in love with Cuba Gooding, Jr. Here's to hoping Ingram's future in the NFL doesn't turn into Snow Dogs. Would Jerry Maguire sequel even revive Cuba's career at this point? Anyway, Alabama is like a young Cuba going into this one, as long as they wear a helmet, on Thursday, everything should be as awesome as a "woodie in the sweats" or one's grandma walking in on them with a meat cleaver. Yeah, I love the BCS.
Langston: I have to admit that conference allegiances won't allow me to pick against the mighty SEC. Since I'm not a lazy loyalist, here are a couple stats to back myself up:
- The SEC is 5-0 in the BCS title game (including the last 3), and have won each game by at least 7 points. The Big 12 is 2-5 in the BCS title game, good for the most appearances in the game but the worst winning percentage. Obviously, none of these facts carry much weight in the game tonight, but history has the tendency to repeat itself.
- Alabama has gone over 200 yards rushing a remarkable nine times this season. Against Florida and Virginia Tech (two top-tier defenses), Alabama rushed for 251 and 268 yards respectively.
- Alabama faced 5 ranked opponents in VT, LSU, Ole Miss, South Carolina, and Florida. They won each game by at least 9 points. Texas faced 3 ranked opponents in Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and Nebraska. Two of those games were decided by 3 points or less. Also, when they played Oklahoma, the Sooners best players (Bradford and Gresham) weren't in the lineup, and they needed phantom seconds to be put on the clock to beat Nebraska.
- Texas' QB Colt McCoy is the winningest QB in college history with a 45-7 record, but Alabama QB Greg McElroy hasn't lost a game as a starter in college or high school.
LCB NFL Picks: Week Fifteen
In Drody, In Langston, In LCB Review, In NFL, In Picks, In picks of the weekDecember 19, 2009
Chris Johnson's amazing season at a glimpse:
- NFL's leading rusher with 1,626 yards; 2nd is Steven Jackson with 1,271
- Averages 6 yards per carry and 125.1 per game
- Carried the ball 272 times, 1 fumble
- 11 rushing touchdowns
- Twenty times he has ran for over 20 yards, leading the league. Purple Jesus is 2nd with eleven 20+ yard runs. He leads the league with seven 40+ yard runs, 2nd is Frank Gore with four.
- He has broken the 100 yard mark in 9 games, with his best being against Jacksonville where he ran for 228 yards. In the four games he didn't reach 100 yards, Kerry Collins was starting.
- 42 receptions for 391 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Cincinnati Bengals vs. San Diego Chargers @ 4:05 on CBS:
I read on Deadspin earlier this week that Carson Palmer has been handing the ball off (irregardless of what side the running back goes-weak or strong) with his right hand. He has no choice in the matter since he injured his left earlier this season. During the two month period he has fumbled the ball a mere 4 times, and I'm not positive how many of those are due to sacks or hand-offs. Either way it is a pretty remarkable feat and I can't imagine too many other QBs with the skills to pull this off successfully with any consistency. For this and this alone, I'll be going with the Bengals in this game. CIN 18, SD 14.
Minnesota Vikings vs. Carolina Panthers @ 8:20 on NBC SNF:
Am I the only one waiting for Favre to return to his form of late 2007 and late 2008 by throwing interception after interception all the while reminding us why retirment seemed like such a good idea the first two times around? If it's going to happen, this would normally be the game. I say would, because this is the time of year where his age starts to show a little more. It's a long season, he has taken some hits, still hasn't missed a game, etc, etc. But the Panthers aren't very good and I am confident that they will be decimated by Purple Jesus and the Vikings. Oh well, here is to another week of waiting. MIN 28, CAR 10.
New York Giants vs. Washington Redskins @ 8:30 on ESPN MNF:
Earlier this week Vinnie Cerrato stepped down from his position as the executive vice-president of football operations for the Redskins. In what seemed like minutes after his press conference the Redskins had his successor, former Tampa Bay GM Bruce Allen (son of former Skins head coach George Allen). Obviously with the quick turnaround between the two men we can safely assume there wasn't a lot of time for other interviewees, which would presumably place them in non-compliance with the Rooney Rule. The NFL and the Redskins have stated that they were in compliance, but I find it hard to believe they ever took the other candidates seriosuly.
Since the NFL says they were in compliance, I don't have a problem with what the Redskins did but I do with how this rule is executed. The Redskins got the man they wanted and they did what the NFL asked of them, so there should be no beef with how they went about getting Allen. But the lack of a forced extended time period between the fired and hired is terrible, and it allows front offices across the league to do the interviews just for show. To put it simply, they are just going through the motions.
I think we can all agree that this is rule has great merit, despite the terrible execution. I think we can also agree that the league would be better suited improving the rule. In my opinion, if the NFL wants this to be a successful they should enact a two to three week gap between personnel changes. This forced downtime would essentially make them follow both the letter and intent of the policy, instead of just the former. If it doesn't change, the impact of the Rooney Rule will be hardly noticeable and we will be asking ourselves why this rule is in place at all. Anyways, I'll take the Redskins to win. Lately they are playing inspired football and if not for a terrible kicker, they would be on a 3 or 4 game winning streak. WAS 21, NY 17.
LCB NFL Picks: Week Thirteen
In Drody, In Langston, In NFL, In Picks, In picks of the weekDecember 6, 2009
Langston: Last week, I mentioned the Colts had their biggest problems with divisional foes and it's mainly for two reasons. The inability to stop Andre Johnson, which if not for a 4th quarter collapse by Houston, would have had them losing a game for the first time since last year. And then there is the front office's stubborness to not plan for the annual injury to Bob Sanders, making it a taller task when facing good running teams. Indy still hasn't fixed this problem, and with Chris "I'm too good to not have an awesome nickname" Johnson coming into town, those holes will have a spotlight shown on them. I'm not sure if it's enough for Tennessee to win their sixth straight, but it will be enough to make this a must watch game. IND 35, TEN 28.
Dallas Cowboys vs. New York Giants @ 4:15 on FOX:
Langston: For a second straight week, we have another 4 o'clock game that looks to be pretty good on paper. Both are marquee teams with quarterbacks to match, both have a realistic shot at the playoffs, and it's a rivalry to boot. However, this game will end up being easily ignored by myself. Thanks to the Giants swift plummet and the annual end of season loss of football fundamentals for the Dallas Cowboys. I suggest you follow my lead and take a nap during the first three quarters. By the time you wake up, maybe it will be close enough to be watchable or at least give you time to see the Cowboy cheerleaders. Wait, it's in Jersey.. I wonder what's on CW. NY 10, DAL 24.
Minnesota Vikings vs. Arizona Cardinals @ 8:20 on NBC SNF:
Langston: This game should be a showcase for the Vikings, as they continue to raise the hopes of Minnesotans only to disappoint them in the playoffs. I like Purple Jesus and Lord Favre to destroy last year's Cinderella. Now I'm not sure of the spread, but I do know the over/under of comments about Favre's "love of the game" is at 16. Bet the over for both. MIN 35, ARZ 21.
Baltimore Ravens vs. Green Bay Packers @ 8:30 on ESPN MNF:
Langston: The Ravens got back on the winning track last week, beating the Steelers at home in over-time. That win was against first time starter Dennis Dixon, who happens to be Pittsburgh's third option. I haven't been able to watch a lot of Packer games, but I do know Aaron Rodgers is much better than Dennis Dixon. And I heard somewhere, I can't remember where, that the Packers have this cornerback who is playing pretty well. I'll bet that he will have his biggest day of the year, covering Joe Flacco's favorite option to lock in on, Derrick Mason. Oh and the Packers win, because, well, they're the better team. GB 24, BAL 21.
LCB NFL Picks: Week Twelve
In Drody, In Langston, In LCB Review, In NFL, In Picks, In picks of the weekNovember 29, 2009
Langston: Over the past couple seasons, the teams that have given the Colts the most problems have been their divisional foes. They have issues with the Jaguars and Titans because they have one of the worst run defenses in the league, all thanks to their faith that Bob Sanders will actually be healthy. The issues with the Texans stem from an inability to stop Andre Johnson from reaching the endzone. However most of the games with the team from Houston end up coming down to a field goal. With how last week ended on Monday night, I can't imagine Gary Kubiak is too excited with that possibility. Indy 35, Houston 32.
Drody: I expect the Colts will keep rolling in this game. I don't see anything stopping them except themselves. In this game, I expect a high scoring affair. The question now is how far the Colts really go in their undefeated season. I think they make it through the reagular season. Colts win this one 42, Texans 24
Jacksonville Jaguars vs. San Fransisco 49ers @ 4:05 on CBS:
Langston: Everything about this game would make it seem like a good game; Both teams are still in the playoff hunt, Patrick Willis and MJD are (as always) playing like men possessed, and there is always the outside chance that Mike Singletary gets so mad steam shoots out of his ears. But this game will probably turn out to be one of two things; a blowout or an offensive struggle. Neither are too inviting, and that's exactly why I will be taking a nap during the 4 o'clock games this week. SF 21, JAX 17.
Drody: When did the Jaguars get good this year? I just remember them looking horrible at the beginning of the season, but now they are in the playoffs? I mean they have the 6 seed as of today? Really when did that happen. I do know the 49ers are bad, so I'm taking the Jaguars to win this one on the road. Jags 24, 49ers 10
Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Baltimore Ravens @ 8:20 on NBC SNF:
Langston: From reading stories about the Ravens, you would think Joe Flacco was going through a sophomore slump and the losses should be blamed on his play. But from taking a cursory glance at his receiving options, it's amazing he has done this well. Apart from Mason, this a pretty sorry lot. (To be fair, Ray Rice has turned into a great receiving threat and Todd Heap is his typical consistent self. Yes, that consistency includes being hurt.) I can't imagine too many other QBs playing to a 89.1 rating with this core, and it's exactly why the journo's covering the Ravens should cut Bert a little slack. If they want a direction in which to point their finger, they should aim for Cam Cameron. BAL 17, PIT 10.
Drody: So no Big Ben in this one, at least that's what I'm reading, so that drastically changes this one. I bet the Ravens pull this one out at home, winning with the defense. Expect a low scoring affair in Baltimore with the Ravens winning a close game and keeping their playoff hopes alive for a little bit longer. Ravens 10, Steelers 7
New England Patriots vs. New Orleans Saints @ 8:30 on ESPN MNF:
Langston: For the past two weeks, all the analysts have talked about was the fourth down "gamble" by Bill Belichick. I used the quotations because I think he did the right thing. The Colts were playing so well in the second half, I think they would have scored from any spot on the field. Anyways, thank goodness this game is here to move the talking heads away from the failings of the Patriots in that game. Don't get me wrong, I love it when the Patriots and their hooded leader are questioned. But this story was dead the Tuesday after and they beat it so far into the ground I'm sure your annoyed I even brought it up. Either way, with this game on the slate, we will get a short break from the nonstop discussions of their blunder. And for that, we should all be very thankful. Patriots 35, Saints 28.
Drody: Finally, a Monday night game in which it actually seems like a game of the week, one I might actually watch with no rooting interest. I think the Pats will end the Saints winning streak this week. I feel like Belichek has something up his sleeve for this game, in which he will stop the potent Saints offense. Pats 24, Saints 17
LCB NFL Picks: Thanksgiving Day
In Drody, In Langston, In NFL, In Picks, In picks of the week, In ThanksgivingNovember 26, 2009
Langston: After the first quarter of last weeks game against the Browns, the Lions were down 24-10. That was when rookie QB Matt Stafford realized he had Calvin Johnson on his team, or at least realized the amount of damage Megatron could do on a football field. Whether it was catching 7 balls for 161 yards and a touchdown, or pulling defenders away from the other receivers, Johnson was making it much easier for the rookie to do his job. So easy in fact, it allowed him to become the first rookie to throw five TDs in a game since Ray Buivid did it for the Bears in 1937. The connection between Stafford and Johnson looks to be a real good one, giving the Lions and their fans hope for the future. However both may miss the game, making this an uphill battle for a team that still has memories of 0-16. GB 35, DET 21.
Drody: Welcome to the wonderful world of Thanksgiving football, where we have 2 games that will probably be terrible. The first involves the Packers and the Lions in an epic NFC north match-up. What a downer the NFC North has been this year. The top three teams were supposed to be the Vikings, Bears and Packers, and all three were supposed to be battling for playoff spots. But alas, it was not to be. The Bears and the Packers have been nowhere near as good as some expectations, and so it leads us to here. I think the Lions pull off the upset this week. After last weeks win, I think a little momentum is goin to help. Calvin Johnson will have a big game. Lions 24, Packers 14
Oakland Raiders vs. Dallas Cowboys @ 4:15 on CBS:
Langston: Bruce Gradkowski and Tom Cable made me a happy fan again. When Jamarcus was starting, I watched the games with an anxious feeling, knowing at any moment the game could be given away. His inability to protect the football made it hard to watch, and his inability to admit his faults made it impossible to defend him. Thankfully Tom wised up, realizing Jamarcus wasn't learning from his mistakes and implanted Bruce as the starting QB. Gradkowski doesn't have the arm that Russell was blessed with, but he doesn't have any of Russell's negative qualities either, he is just a QB whose team comes first. With Bruce under center I think the Raiders will make this a Thanksgiving to remember (well, for me anyways), with a 24-17 upset over America's team.
Drody: The second wonderful game of Thanksgiving, and again, I'm giving thanks for upsets. I think the Raiders are gonna pull this one out too. Again the Raiders are riding a bit of momentum going against the Cowboys. I hate the Cowboys. They are the anti-America's team to me. So I root against them any time I can. They ruin Thanksgiving sometimes. Raiders 20, Cowboys 10
New York Giants vs. Denver Broncos @ 8:20 on NFL Network:
Langston: Remember last week? When I said the most enjoyable thing about the AFC West race, was watching the Broncos blow their great start to the season? Yeah, well, it still rings true. Giants 28, Broncos 21.
Drody: Finally, a good game. Both these teams are slumping, but they should have a good game here. I feel like the Broncos should always be the 3rd Thanksgiving game. Just because their name starts with the letter D. Anyway. I think that Orton will play, and that the Broncos pick up the win. I'm not counting the Giants out yet, but the Broncos need the win more. Broncos 31, Giants 28
LCB NFL Picks: Week Eleven
In Drody, In Langston, In NFL, In Picks, In picks of the weekNovember 21, 2009
Atlanta Falcons vs. New York Giants @ 1:00 on Fox:
Drody: My gut says the Giants, so I'm gonna go with the Falcons. To be honest, When this season started, I was big on the Giants, and not on the Falcons. And both of these teams have played the opposite of what I was expecting. The Giants are reeling, so look for the Falcons to have a big game to solidfy their spot as a playoff contender in the NFC. Falcons 30, Giants 17.
San Diego Chargers vs. Denver Broncos @ 4:15 on CBS:
Langston: Last year the Broncos squandered a huge division lead, that allowed the Chargers to frog jump them for the division title on the last day of the season. And hey would you look at that, they are blowing another great start to the season. One that had them at 6-0. A season with so much promise being wasted, like a redneck with lottery winnings. I can't say their failures isn't highly enjoyable for me. As a Raider fan, it's pretty much the only enjoyment I get out of the AFC West race. So keep it up Denver, and know that at least one person is enjoying your annual slide from grace towards mediocrity. SD 28, DEN 27.
Drody: Again, I want to pick the Broncos, but I should probably go with the Chargers. The Chargers are just doing what they do always do. Win the division in the year, have a good, but not great team. The formula doesn't change. It's amazing, too, that Kyle "neckbeard' Orton dooms the Broncos chances in this game. Chargers win big, Chargers 24, Broncos 7
Philadelphia Eagles vs. Chicago Bears @ 8:20 on NBC SNF:
Langston: How long until Chicago fans realize that winning a Super Bowl with Jim McMahon has cursed the Bears for all of eternity? What other reason could their be for Jay Cutler turning into Rex Grossman part deux? [Being told "Cutler isn't that good. And was made to look great thanks to a well-run/simpler offense in Denver, Brandon Marshall and a consistent offensive line"] Oh, well, alright then. Enjoy the interceptions Drody. PHI 24, CHI 18.
Drody: O, the Bears, how terrible you are this year! It amazes me. Let me tell you a story. When the Bears traded for Jay Cutler, I was skeptical. I really was. And I told my younger brother, "Look, its not that Cutler is bad, but here's the thing. What if when Cutler gets here, our coaches aren't good enough to do anything with him?" He had no answer to that then, and so far it has come true. I have no expectations for this Bears team whatsoever. They will get killed on national tv for the 4th time this year. It won't be pretty. Expect the Eagles to win big. Eagles 48, Bears 7. That's right, it will be a blowout. (and no I didn't pick opposite for this game, because I have no hope for the Bears)
Tennessee Titans vs. Houston Texans @ 8:30 on ESPN MNF:
Langston: Drody thinks this match-up stinks. Most of America, probably, feels the same way. However this is one of the few games on the Monday night schedule that I am actually excited to watch. Why? Chris Johnson has been tearing the league up. His talents running and catching the ball out of the backfield make him appear to be a created player on Madden with 99 level attributes for everything. And I love it. He has been so good, it's just a matter of time before analysts start naming him as a player "they would pay to see." Speaking of which, why do they always use that as a compliment towards a player? Are all of these guys cheap? Or are the rest of the backs in the league not worth the scratch? Do they view the fans as simpletons, because they forked over the cash to watch a game not involving one of these cash-worthy athletes? Why are they calling us dumb? Am I reading too much into this? TEN 42, HOU 28.
Drody:Where did these games come from on Monday night this year? There have been some real crap games. The Titans will win this one, as Vince Young continues his hall of fame career with more victories. Titans 17, Texans 10
LCB NFL Picks: Week Ten
In Drody, In Langston, In NFL, In Picks, In picks of the weekNovember 14, 2009
Langston: Russ stated that if the Bengals win Sunday that they would have swept both the Ravens and Steelers, it would be quite the feat and put them in the driver seat in the AFC North. He didn't mention that they haven't swept the season series from the Steelers since 1998. Showing me that it's unlikely to happen, and it hurts the Bengals chances that Troy Polamalu is healthy or at least playing (he didn't play in week 3). I'll go with the Steelers, afterall history is on my side. And I am still not sold on the Bengals as more than wild-card round losers. Pittsburgh 17, Cincinatti 10.
Drody: Looking at the slate of games we have to pick from this week, it looks like a good one. This first match up hits home for me. It's a big sports weekend in Pittsburgh, so I expect the Steelers getting a big victory. Big, not as in the destroy the Bengals, but big, because I do believe they will get the victory, and resume their place at the top of the division. A big game will be had by Rashard Mendelhall, and the Steelers win. Steelers 24, Bengals 10
Philadelphia Eagles vs. San Diego Chargers @ 4:15 on Fox:
- They were named after a credit card company.
- Norv Turner is their coach
- Philip Rivers talks trash to everyone, including fans.
- Can you imagine if Tom Brady or Peyton Manning did this? The fall-out would be covered constantly. But since it's Rivers, it's expected. When you expect a supposed role-model to act like such a poor sport, I believe that would be the definition of douchey.
- Shawne Merriman, has a useless "e" attached to the end of his name, beats women, has a sack dance that he does regardless of the score, and does steroids.
New England Patriots vs. Indianapolis Colts @ 8:20 on NBC SNF:
Langston: If you have been watching any sort of sports programming, there is no chance you didn't know all the essentials for this game; You already know the records of the two teams, the time of the game, the channel, the history, the protagonists/antagonists, etc. You would be led to believe that this will be the biggest game since football was invented. But is the hype necessary? Who are these fans that need a reminder to watch this game? Seriously, I want to know. Indy 31, Pats 28.
Drody: Another great game for the average fan. I think the Colts keep rolling with a win here. But this brings up another question, how close is Peyton Manning to being the greatest quarterback of all time? I mean seriously, the guy has a super bowl win, and the whole reason this team hasn't missed a step with a new coach is because Peyton is still there. I know Brady has more Super Bowl wins, and yes, he does have a great career, so maybe both of them are the greatest. But I would take Peyton over Brady, and that's just me. Colts 35, Patiots 28
Baltimore Ravens vs. Cleveland Browns @ 8:30 on ESPN MNF:
Langston: When the schedulers decided this would be the Monday night game, what were they thinking? There was no reason to believe that this would be a good match-up this late in the season. Did they have a contractual obligation to have the Browns in prime-time? Did they just want to stick the knife deeper into the fans of Cleveland? One of (if not) the most tortured fanbases in the country. The Indians have traded every valuable franchise piece they have in the past two seasons, save for Grady Sizemore. The Browns are arguablly the worst team in football. Ohio State isn't even going to lose a BCS game at this point. And the only good thing going for them is Lebron, and they are constantly reminded of him probably bolting after this season. So what's another blow-out on a national stage really mean for this fanbase? Baltimore 35, Cleveland 14.
Drody: Cleveland is awful, I can't believe they are gonna be on Monday night. This is just terrible game. They can't beat anyone, this doesn't make any sense. Maybe Mangini will go crazy or something, at least to make it interesting. Or that Harbaugh fights Mangini during halftime. I don't know something crazy needs to happen for this game to be watchable. Maybe Ray Lewis will bite off someone's ear, Tyson style. Anyway, the Ravens win easily. Ravens 42, Browns 0
LCB NFL Picks: Week Nine
In Drody, In Langston, In LCB Review, In NFL, In Picks, In picks of the weekNovember 8, 2009
Houston Texans vs. Indianapolis Colts @ 1:00 on CBS:
Langston: The Texans have turned into one of the best offenses in football in the past couple of weeks. But with Owen Daniels hitting the IR and Steve Slaton having his problems holding onto the ball, the offense won't be as explosive. But I don't see the decline happening this week. Afterall Indy's defense is pretty terrible and surprise, Bob Sanders is hurt again. Though the Colts have found a great third option in rookie WR Austin Collie, allowing them to continue their offensive exploits of the past decade with ease. One that has allowed "Everyone's MVP" Peyton Manning to throw for 300 ypg week-after-week. So this will be another shoot-out with the last team scoring taking the win, and that team will be the unbeaten Colts. Indy 42, Houston 38.
Drody: Big divisional match up with the Texans going to Indy to try and make up some ground against the leader Colts. I know I've said this multiple times this year about multiple teams, but the Colts just seem to have "it" this year. What that means in the long run, I'm not sure, but I do think the Colts will win this one pretty easily. Colts 27, Texans 12
San Diego Chargers vs. New York Giants @ 4:15 on CBS:
Langston: San Diego is coming off a bye week and should be well rested as they try to stay in the AFC West race with the Broncos. The Giants have finally shown that they aren't really good, losing three straight and looking downright pathetic in last weeks blowout loss against the Eagles. Essentially both teams need this win to save their shot at the playoffs. But thanks to the long trip out east for the Chargers, I like the Giants to bounce back with Brandon Jacobs finally eclipsing the 100 yard mark. New York 35, San Diego 21.
Drody: With 3 losses in a row, I feel that the Giants are slowly losing their footing in a tight NFC race. Not just the division, mind you, but for the playoffs in general. They need to win this one. The Chargers also are fighting for relevancy in their league. I think the Giants pick this one up in a close one. Being at home is the main advantage to me, and I see Eli having a big game. Giants 34, Chargers 30
Dallas Cowboys vs. Philadelphia Eagles @ 8:20 on NBC:
Langston: I have no real grasp on the quality of either team in this game. The Cowboys have played great in recent weeks, but I haven't got to see them play. The Eagles have had two huge wins in a row, and their offense has proven they can score at any moment from any spot on the field. However I saw them lose to Oakland, which has clouded my judgment whenever I see them on the field. I'll take the Eagles, because they have DeSean Jackson. Philly 28, Dallas 27.
Drody: Langston said he takes the Eagles because they have DeSean Jackson, and I agree with that statement. When I got offered Maurice Jones-Drew and DeSean Jackson in a fantasy trade for Randy Moss and some scrubs, I jumped at the chance. DeSean Jackson is good, that's the bottom line. I don't have a good feel for either of these teams right now, so I'm gonna go with the Eagles winning, Eagles 24, Boys 17
Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Denver Broncos @ 8:30 on ESPN MNF:
Langston: I understand that both of these teams have played well this season and that this is an awesome match-up in comparison to most of the Monday night games, but I have absolutely no interest in watching this game. Just like the World Series, I wish this game could have both teams leaving with a loss. That's not happening, and I will begrudgingly watch it anyways. Steelers 24, Denver 21.
Drody: Big AFC matchup in Denver. Can I just say something about the Ryan Clark situation though? So Ryan Clark almost DIED the last time he played in Denver. He lost two organs because of the elevation of the city. And he wants to play there again? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? That is about the dumbest thing I have ever heard. And all the bull crap about "wow, this guy really is putting his team first." is also just some dumb stuff. The team needs to put Ryan Clark first and say that his life is more important that one lousy football game. Seriously. Steelers pull the upset in Denver, as the Kyle Orton magic gradually dissipates as the season drags on. Steelers 17, Broncos 3

Langston: Like Drody, I could go either way on this game. The Eagles have the ability to score at any moment with Desean Jackson. The Giants have a well-balanced offense, with Brandon Jacobs pounding the ball and a whole host of young receivers ready to do damage. Both have capable defenses and both could really use this win. Taking that all into account, along with Westbrook being a game-time decision, I'm going with the Giants. I just can't see a team of this caliber losing three straight. Giants 42, Eagles 35.
Drody: Tough game to pick, this NFC east battle. The Giants have been pushed to the back burner, due to their loss to the undefeated Saints. The Eagles, also are trying to gain some momentum with back to back victories over division foes. I look for this to be a close game, but the Giants pull it out and pull ahead in the divisional race. Giants 24, Eagles 17
Denver Broncos vs. Baltimore Ravens @ 1:00 on CBS:
Langston: When I look at the Broncos and their remarkable start, I can't help but to think of last year's Cardinals. Orton plays the part of Kurt Warner, a QB who should be doing anything else but starting yet continues to surprise teams week after week. Brandon Marshall plays the part of Anquan Boldin, a disgruntled WR having a great year. And then there is me, who plays the part of me, doubting this team week in and out just waiting for them to show their true colors. I don't know if it will happen anytime soon or at all. But like last year I will continue to be skeptical of this team, despite having every reason not to. Ravens 34, Broncos 27.
Drody: The Broncs try to keep rolling, and the Ravens need to keep pace in the division. I think the Ravens win this one at home, and knock off the Broncos for the first time this week. The Ravens D will come out inspired and just destroy Kyle Orton. Sorry Neckbeard, I don't see you having a good game this week. The Ravens win this one soundly, Ravens 28, Broncos 10
Minnesota Vikings vs. Green Bay Packers @ 4:15 on FOX:
Langston: I thought that I would be fairly indifferent when it came to the "Favre Bowl," but it would be disingenuous of me to claim that I haven't bought into the hype. I cannot wait for this game; for the first Packer defender to get a hit on Favre in Lambeau, to witness the angst of an entire stadium of fans, or for Aaron Rodgers to show Favre in person why they chose to move on. This game should be quite the production and I will be rooting for the Packers to exact a little bit of revenge. However I just don't see them overcoming their beleaguered offensive line and the Vikings rushing attack. Vikings 17, Packers 10.
Drody: Favre bowl, I still hate both these teams. Side note: Doesn't the Favre media attention remind you about the Sarah Palin coverage last election? I mean, the media says they give the people what they want, but who wants to hear about Favre anymore? I don't know anyone who isn't sick of him. Packers win in front of the home crowd. Packers 28, Vikings 14
Atlanta Falcons vs. New Orleans Saints @ 8:30 on ESPN MNF:
Langston: If the Broncos are the 2009 Arizona Cardinals reincarnated, the Saints are the '99 Rams. They look unbeatable, they score a ton, and the defense makes opposing teams pay for their mistakes. I like them to keep it rolling on Monday Night, in their effort to give New Orleans hope for the fourth year in a row.
Drody: I forsee the Saints continuing their dominance of the NFL in this game. They just seem unstoppable right now. I think the Saints O just keeps roling, and their defense to play well enough to win. I'm also not that high on the Falcons right now. The Saints lengthen their division lead with a win on Monday night. Saints 35, Falcons 17

Minnesota Vikings vs. Pittsburgh Steelers @ 1:00 on FOX:
Langston: I just got back from Charlottesville and it's 12:50 on Sunday afternoon, so all of my picks will be short and sweet this week. The Vikings have the better defense and running game; Vikes win a close one. Minnesota 35, Pittsburgh 31.
Drody: I hate the Vikings. Seriously. And all this Brett Favre stuff on the Vikings makes me sick. I really can't stand it. Brett Favre is ruining football for me. It's awful. The Steelers also need to win a big game like this against an opponent considered to be one of the best. Seeing as how the Steelers are at home, and add to that my hatred of all things Vikings this year, I'm predicting a Steelers victory. Expect Jeff Reed, Pittsburgh's drunk kicker, to pull this one out. Reed needs to redeem himself to the city of Pittsburgh, so that he can keep going out and being a drunk idiot. Steelers 23, Vikings 20.
Chicago Bears vs. Cincinnati Bengals @ 4:15 on FOX:
Langston: Going through the lineups, the only real edge either team has over the other is in the running game. So I will go with the Bears winning by a field goal over the Bengals 20 to 17.
Drody: Damn it, have to pick another Bears game. I have no idea what to expect with this team, so I'm going to be the pessimistic Bears fan this week. Hopefully, this reverse psycology works. The Bengals will most likely pull this one out, being at home. I expect Cedric Benson to have a big game, mainly to prove it to the Bears brass that got rid of him too soon. Ochocinco will probably have a big game too, whereas the wheels will keep falling off for the Bears running game. Forte hasn't been good at all this year, and I don't expect him to get any better this week. Bengals 31, Bears 17
Arizona Cardinals vs. New York Giants @ 8:20 on NBC SNF:
Langston: In the following, Drody will claim he has a new rule. But I have been using that same method for the past year and a half. Giants 35, Cardinals 21.
Drody: This is a bounce back game for the Giants, one on national TV at that. They need to prove that they still are a good team, after losing big last weekend to the Saints. And I still don't know what to think of the NFC West. I think I'm going to pick against them completely whenever a team from the NFC west is playing a different division. That's it, that's a new rule. Giants 24, Cardinals 14
Philidelphia Eagles vs. Washington Redskins @ 8:30 on ESPN MNF:
Langston: Andy Reid called 46 pass plays against Oakland, who happens to have one of the worst run defenses in the league. 46 pass plays! That makes absolutely no sense. But neither does giving playcalling duties to a guy halfway through the season who has been out of the NFL for 5 years and was mostly recently working at a senior citizen place calling out bingo numbers. Eagles 21, Redskins 10.
Drody: I kind of love the mess that is the Washington Redskins this year. Everyone keeps waiting for the coach to get fired, the team has yet to play a team with a victory while playing them, yet somehow this team is still awful. The Eagles, on the other hand, I think are a very good team. I expect them to win this one soundly, purely based on the terribleness of the Redskins. Eagles 35, Redskins 0

New York Giants vs. New Orleans Saints @ 1:00 on Fox:
Langston: This game is expected to be a preview of the NFC Championship game, and is easily the game of the week. Both teams are undefeated, with the respective offenses carrying the load. But only one of these teams has the number one ranked defense, I'll take that team. Giants 28 Saints 24.
Drody: I think this is going to be an amazing game. Both of these teams have been just dominating opponents so far, on both sides of the ball. I think New Orleans is going to be jacked up a little more for it though, since they are the home team. I think NO pulls this one out in a high scoring affair. Now, this doesn't mean I think New Orleans is the better team, I just think they win this match up being at home. Saints 35, Giants 24
Arizona Cardinals vs. Seattle Seahawks @ 4:05 on Fox:
Langston: The fact that this is the best game at 4 o'clock this week, proves bye weeks should be saved for weeks 8 and 9. Why put us through these bad games for such a long part of the season when you can have half the league take week 8 off and the other week 9.
The Cardinals have dominated this series of late, winning four out of the last five. But the Seahawks are really good when Hasselbeck is healthy, just ask Jacksonville. 'Hawks win and the Cardinals continue down the familiar path of mediocrity for recent Super Bowl losers. Cardinals 17, Seahawks 24.
Drody: Wow, this is really the best game at this time? How miserable. Well, if I have to pick a winner, I'm gonna go with the Seahawks at home. I think this Seahawks team will probably win their division, as long as Hasselbeck can stay healthy all year long, or at least most of the year. Now, winning the division also probably means they will be 8-8, but whatever. Seahawks 17, Cardinals 10
Chicago Bears vs. Atlanta Falcons @ 8:20 on NBC SNF:
Langston: I have watched three of the four Bears games, and I know absolutely nothing about them apart from the typical information provided in a media guide. They have won three straight, their offense is getting better with every game, and I suspect a lot of the Windy City's newborns will either be named Johnny or Knox. But like I said I still know almost nothing about this team. Are they good or are they just above average? I don't know. What I do know is the Falcons can score on any defense in the league, and I expect it will be tough for the Bears to keep pace. Falcons 35, Bears 28.
Drody: As an unabashed Bears fan, I of course have to pick them. After last year's heartbreaking loss in Atlanta, the Bears want revenge. They want to win this game to show all those experts keeping them at 12 in their power rankings are wrong. They want to prove that they are the best team in the NFC north. At least, that's what I'm hoping they are trying to prove with a win here. I think this will actually be a high scoring affair, Bears 38, Falcons 30
Denver Broncos vs. San Diego Chargers @ 8:30 on ESPN MNF:
Langston: Kyle Orton is the starting QB for an undefeated team that's ranked 6th in total offense. Let me repeat that. Kyle Orton is the starting QB for an undefeated team that's ranked 6th in total offense. KYLE ORTON. This has to stop. San Diego 21, Denver 17.
Drody: This is one of those games that the Chargers need to win, to prove that they are still the team to beat in the AFC west. Although, I'm not sure if Phillip Rivers will still be able to be his asshole self, without Jay Cutler on the other sideline to mouth off at. I mean, really, who is gonna waste their time talking trash to Kyle Orton? I mean, he doesn't scare anyone. Either way, the Chargers pull this one out, Chargers 10, Broncos 3

Cincinnati Bengals vs. Baltimore Ravens @ 1:00 on CBS:
Langston: Through the first four weeks, the Ravens have been playing the best football in the AFC, and if not for the Tom Brady rules they would be undefeated. Their offense looks like an entirely different unit this year and the following are the biggest reasons why; Flacco has gone from game manager to franchise quarterback, the wide receiving unit actually consists of more than Derrick Mason and Todd Heap and lastly McGahee decided it's time to stop impregnating and start scoring. The defense has regressed a little bit, but it's not very noticeable when the offense is scoring the way it is. I like the Ravens to bounce back in a big way, winning this game 24 to 10.
Drody: The new order of the AFC north? That's what is on the line in this game. Both of these teams hope to distance themselves from the Steelers and be on their way to a division championship. The Ravens look to bounce back after a loss to the Pats last week, while the Bengals are continuing to prove themselves against top opponents. I think the Bengals want this one more, after last weeks nail biter against the Browns. I think the Bengals pull this one out though, Ochocinco scores a couple and the Bengals keep on a roll. Bengals 17, Ravens 10
Atlanta Falcons vs. San Fransisco 49ers @ 4:05 on Fox:
Langston: For me, this is the hardest game to peg. For each team's strength, the other has an equal counterattack. The 49ers biggest strength is their defense, the Falcons is their passing attack. The 49ers offense is started by the running game, the Falcons defense is best at stopping the run. I really have no idea how this game will play out, but I like the Falcons to win. I just don't see the Niner defense and special teams combining for three touchdowns again. Atlanta 24, San Fransisco 14.
Drody: This is an interesting game for me. Personally, I don't think either of these teams are as good as their records/ other peoples projections say them to be. It's an interesting game to see if either of these teams are for real. I think the 49ers will win their division, but it's because they are in a terrible division. I think the NFC south is down in general this year, besides the Saints. Since that's the case, and this game is in San Fran, I think the 49ers win this one easily. 49ers 28, Falcons 17
Indianapolis Colts vs. Tennessee Titans @ 8:20 on NBC SNF:
Langston: Since the departues of Albert Haynesworth and Jim Schwartz, the Titan defense has turned into one of the worst in the NFL. Through four games they have allowed 108 points, good for bottom five in the league. That doesn't bode well for a team hosting one of the best scoring offenses in the league in primetime. I like Peyton to throw for 300 again, the Titans to consider playing Vince Young, and the Colts to win. Indy 42, Tennessee 10.
Drody: This game is a joke. Tennessee is terrible, the Colts are good. Peyton leads the Colts to a sound victory. I wish I had Peyton for fantasy purposes this week, but I don't, so that sucks. Colts 35, Titans 3
NY Jets vs. Miami Dolphins @ 8:30 on ESPN MNF:
Langston: The Dolphins may be playing at home, the Dolphins may have one of the best rushing attacks in the league, and they may have a chance at winning this game. But I don't buy it. The Jets defense is suffocating. The offense is well balanced. And they have an unmatched swagger. With all of these attributes, how could the Jets not win? Jets 35, Dolphins 28.
Drody: Another game on national tv that is not a good game. People are saying the Dolphins are liable to win this one, that they're due or something like that. I don't buy it. I think the Jets defense handles the Dolphins back up quarterback, and the Jets pull out the victory to keep them in the driver's seat for the AFC east. Jets 24, Dolphins 10
LCB NFL Picks: Week Four
In Drody, In Langston, In NFL, In Picks, In picks of the weekOctober 3, 2009
Langston: Last week in the comment section, I refuted the fact that the Bengals are the team we overlooked the most in our previews, instead I stated it was the Ravens. After looking at their schedule, I realized I bought into the hype way too early. Two of their three wins have come against some of the worst teams in the NFL(Chiefs and Browns). With the Ravens finally playing against an upper echelon team, I like them to finally look average. And the Patriots will win this game thanks to Tom Brady and Randy Moss reverting back to their form of 2007. NE 24 BAL 17.
Drody: These aren't your daddy's Ravens anymore, no sir. The Ravens look to be the class of the AFC this year, with 2nd year stud Joe Flacco leading the way. With a solid defense to go along, the Ravens look good this year. The Pats, on the other hand do not. For some reason, everything about this team screams "DONE!!" I guess maybe they're luck has just run out. Ravens 24, Pats 13
New York Jets vs. New Orleans Saints @ 4:05 on CBS:
Langston: This is the game of the week. No, it doesn't involve two teams that routinely play eachother in the playoffs, nor does it include a future hall of famer playing against the team that allowed him to become who he is today. But it possibly involves the NFL's best defense and offense. Rex Ryan and his blitzkreig defense verses the air attack of the Saints. It should be fun to watch how Brees deals with the neverending pressure while also watching to see if Sanchez and his offense can keep pace. In a game like this with two teams playing great football with two different types of attack, I always take the team with the better defense. Jets 31 Saints 28
Drody: Both of these teams are big surprises to me. I've never been big on the Saints and the Jets have just been so awful lately that I just stopped caring. But in this new season, both teams are rolling. The Jets behind Buddy Ryan's son, Rex, are winning, with the "Sanchize" leading the way. But honestly, I see no team stopping the Saints offense at this point. Drew Brees is leading an unstoppable force right now. I see this one as a run and gun affair. Saints 48-Jets 20
San Diego Chargers vs. Pittsburgh Steelers @ 8:20 on NBC:
Langston: At this point in the season, both of these teams look average at best. The Chargers offense looks great at points, but the declining ability of LT is having a major effect on their ability to close games in the fourth. The Steelers play good enough defense and pass the ball well, but their running game leaves a lot to be desired. This should be a close game. But due to the heavy blitzing of Pittsburgh and the injured Tory Polamalu, I like Darren Sproles to have a bunch of big plays off of screen passes. Chargers 21 Steelers 18
Drody: I'm afraid to live in Pittsburgh if the Steelers lose another game. Really, I have no idea how these people will react. I have no idea how Mike Tomlin will react if they lose another game. I mean, now that guy is Mr. Intensity. On the other end of the spectrum, I don't like the Chargers at all. Norv Turner is still their coach, Phillip Rivers is still an a-hole. Not much to like about that. Also, their defense likes to use steroids. The Steelers need this one more, and won't lose 3 in a row in front of their home crowd. Steelers 21, Chargers 7
Green Bay Packers vs. Minnesota Vikings @ 8:30 on ESPN MNF:
Langston: Am I the only one who thinks Greg Lewis should be the guy everyone should have been talking about this week? Favre chucked and prayed. While Lewis got space, jumped, caught the ball, and stayed in bounds. That was a play where if Lewis fails to do any of the four, the Vikings lose. For Favre getting all the credit, I like the Packers to exact a little bit of revenge for all the fans fed up with the Favre-ication of the mass media. Packers 28 Vikings 24
Drody: I hate both these teams. I foresee both teams getting severe cases of the swine flu. 0-0 forfeit by both teams. Brett Favre is never heard from again. Packers 13, Vikings 10

This week started off with a snow storm that swept up the Atlantic Coast from the south. It hit in Georgia, and it continued up into New York and New England. This tour, headlined by The Whigs, features three Georgia bands, and their route has them going as far north as Boston, where the first shots of the Revolutionary War were fired (roughly). This tour was like seeing a successful invasion of the north. At the beginning of the week, we were buried in snow, I was sitting on my couch under blankets, and the temperature was in the 20s. Today I'm wearing shorts and the temperature is supposed to rise into the 70s. I think rock 'n roll is the reason.
It was my second time seeing The Whigs live in DC. The first time they opened for The Kings of Leon, and the show was at Constitution Hall. It felt like watching a show inside of the Sandy Creek Nature Center's star globe, a tent that visited all the local schools in Athens, so that students could learn about stars and constellations. This concert introduced me to The Whigs, and I thought these guys are going to be their own three-pronged constellation.
The Whigs also brought baseball season with them. They came out on stage to the Tomahawk Chop, and there's nothing more nostalgic than the start of baseball season. The Whigs, Dead Confederate, and Trances Arc, I thank you for ushering in a new season. These Leiney's are for you cause we need music too, in order to clean the slate.

A Trip to Pittsburgh
In barack obama, In Circuit City, In damn cold, In Drody, In French-Indian War, In ketchup, In Picksburgh, In Pittsburgh, In ramblings, In Super Bowl, In TeachFebruary 1, 2009
I stopped once on the way for gas and a meatball sub at a Sheetz just before getting onto the Pennsylvania Turnpike, and snow covered the ground. It's a strange experience to leave a place where one has not even seen a snowflake all winter, drive hours in the dark, and then step out of one's vehicle to find the earth wrapped in a blanket of snow and ice, without ever having seen a snowflake fall. The experience can cause one to lose their seasonal context, like the season 5 premier of Lost or the premier of Life on Mars. I lost my reference point when I stepped out of my car and into the dead of winter. I called Drody to see how far away I was and to inform him that I may have gotten lost in Narnia, that my car was a magic wardrobe, and that Mr. Thomnas made my meatball sub at Sheetz, before a werewolf truck driver came in and wrecked the place. Western Pennsylvania took me out of comfort zone.
I like to ease into winter, so this trip came as a shock to my system. I never saw the snow fall, but there it was covering everything; and it wasn't a clean, fresh snow. This snow had already been churned up in rubber tires and covered with grease and oil. This snow was already sludge and looked more like it came from a slag heap at a coal mine than from a nimbostratus cloud.
Before arriving in western Pennsylvania, my winter experience had been a busted thermostat that caused my apartment's temperature to dib into the 40's. In Picksburgh, there was snow, negative temperatures, and a busted water pipe in Drody's apartment building. The landlord notified us of the break with a sign on the building's front door that read, "PIPE BREAK FIX SOON." I wondered if their landlord was an Indian chief from a politically incorrect John Wayne movie: "Red sun rise. All water dry up. Must go to river. For people to live free like buffalo. White man cheap bastard."
I'll jump into a swimming pool without dipping my feet, but when it's cold outside I can take all morning to get out of bed. I sip hot chocolate slowly because I'm afraid of burning my tongue. The cold makes me less responsive. I struggle to adapt. Last year, while at school, snow covered all the cars in the parking lot, and I didn't have an ice scraper. Instead, I used my longboard to shovel snow off my windows. I don't like the cold, and I don't understand why people choose to live in it.
When humankind rose up on two legs and walked out of Africa, I don't know why anyone walked into places like Mongolia, Scandanavia, and Picksburgh and decided to stay put, unless frostbite had already taken hold of their feet and legs and forced them to make permanent encampments. These places seem unnatural to live in, just as yinz sounds unnatural to anyone not from there. Of course, I drop a yall in every sentence, so who am I to judge? Still, the cold makes me feel tired, beat down, and weary. It makes my left knee turn into a rusted hinge that squeeks and creaks like the Tin Man's jaw. I was only in it for four days and three nights. I can't imagine what living in a place like that does to one's psyche after days turn into months, months turn into years, years turn into decades, and decades turn into generations. After just a few days, I took pride that I was sleeping in shorts and not flannel pajamas. After experiencing years of living in that frozen, stagnant sludge, I'd probably take great pride in terrible towels, the Pens, and the ghost of Roberto Clemente.
I got to Drody's on Friday night. We spent the night drinking Pabst Blue Ribbon, instead of Steel City Ale, and playing RockBand. Our band was called The Newsies. We wore newsie hats and brown blazers. Every song started with one of the following lines: "Get your papes!" or "Have no fear, Brooklyn is here!" It was a fun night. On Saturday, Drody, the fiancee, and I went and saw some of the sights of Picksburgh. We hit up one of the Jewish neighborhoods of the city for some pizza, we saw the strip, and then we went to the Heinz museum.
First, let me say that Stiller fans are a strange breed. I wouldn't even call them fans. They should be called followers because they're a religious cult. On Saturday, it was still damn cold outside, and these people are still outside, shopping for black and gold gear at a flea market, known as the strip. The thing is, each person I saw buying more Stiller gear was already wearing multiple jerseys. Several of these people don't wear coats or jackets to stay warm--they just wear more jerseys. I bet if one were to go up to one of them and ask him to peel off their jerseys one by one, the history of the franchise would be revealed. It would be like going into an old rowhouse and peeling off the wallpaper, only to find another layer of wallpaper, representing a bygone era. The first jersey would be Big Ben's, then a Polamalu jersey, then a Bettis jersey, then Kevin Greene and Greg Lloyd, then Ron Woodson, followed by Mean Joe Green, Franco Harris, Lynn Swann, and Terry Bradshaw. I don't know why these people were out buying more merchandise when everything they already own is black and gold. It's like watching King Midas as a football fan, and everything he touches turns into Stiller memorabilia. Midas wound up despising himself and his gift when he came to the realization that gold can't sustain human life. Can a city that was built for the twentieth century be sustained by a football franchise in the twenty-first century?
The Heinz museum is an interesting place. We took the elevator up to the top exhibit, which is dedicated to the French-Indian War. The French-Indian War was just a tremor of the Seven Years' War going on in Europe, a sign that the world was shifting and changing into something else. This shift was the world turning away from colonialism and monarchies and towards nationalism and democracy. At the time, this war did not seem to be about ideals and how nations define themselves as much as it was about territory. Picksburgh is built on the front of this 18th century war. Picksburgh is a city formed from a series of forts built strategically where rivers meet. Rivers and oceans have always shaped the world in which we live. Water takes many forms: liquid, ice, snow, rain, sleet, steam, and sludge; these forms, in turn, shape human life.
A series of forts becomes a city that ships out coal, steel, glass, and condiments. In the Heinz Museum, the floor below the French-Indian War exhibit holds three exhibits of its own. The first exhibit lays out the history of glass making in the Ohio River Valley, and gives examples of everything glass is used for. It's a long list, and one can feel like quite "the stupidhead" when looking at objects that don't look like glass but are.
The second exhibit was dedicated to Heinz Ketchup, Heinz pickles, and other processed foods. The Heinz Corporation began processing and packaging foods in the nineteenth century. These foods became staples of the American diet in the 20th century. America could not have become a suburban and commuter society without these staples. It's ironic that a blue collar town, such as Picksburgh, paved the way for America becoming a white collar nation, making itself obsolete. Throughout this exhibit, one can hear Carly Simon, singing the lines: "Anticipation, anticipation/ is makin' me late/ is keepin' me waitin'." One can even hear these lines being sung while walking through a third exhibit on that floor dedicated to those men who lost their lives in Pennsylvania's coal mines.
The anticipation of waiting to be dug out of a collapsed mine shaft is much different than the anticipation of waiting for ketchup to come pouring out of a Heinz 57 bottle. America's steel belt has been America's rust belt for a while now, waiting with anticipation for how the world's shifting waters and governments will help them get back on their feet. While places like Picksburgh have been stuck in cave ins and winter's frozen sludge, places like Virginia have only needed patience for ketchup and other trivial items.
The day before the pipe in Drody's apartment building busted, his fiance discovered dirt leaking into the back of the toilet, meaning there was already a crack in the pipes. She called the landlord to tell them there was something wrong. The landlord didn't fix the problem or worry about it that day. Then the pipe busted and the landlord put up a sign: "PIPE BREAK FIX SOON." When Drody's fiance was on the phone with the landlord on Saturday, I sat on the couch, watching basketball, thinking this isn't a big deal. On Sunday, I couldn't piss or crap in the toilet. I had to hold in my sludge for hours, as did Drody and his fiancee.
We wound up going to Circuit City because they're going out of business and everything in the store had to go. We stopped at a fastfood place on the way to use the bathroom because when a person can't go in their own home, they still have to go somewhere. At Circuit City, all the yinzers that had been at the strip buying Stiller merchandise on Saturday were now at Circuit City buying plasma televisions to watch the Stillers on, while wearing their newly purchased Stiller merchandise. Midas apparently was still at work, touching everything.
There's been dirt in America's toilet for years. Places like western Pennsylvania, Ohio, Detroit, and upstate New York have been calling their landlords for decades, but Washington was too busy helping Wall Street make sure their burgers had ketchup. "Anticipation, anticipation/ it's makin' me late/ is makin' me wait." After hearing Obama's inauguration address and witnessing his first two weeks in office, I hope that the wait for some of America's heartland to be dug out of a cave in is finally over. I hope the fact that Picksburgh lies where three rivers meet allows it to adapt for the 21st century. I hope this is the last time the dirt in the toilet lesson needs to be learned by landlords. I hope that after the Seven Years' War, two World Wars, and multiple global economic crises our leaders realize that Midas touches everything from ketchup bottles to coal mines, from water pipes to rivers, from flea markets to Circuit City, from Pennsylvania's winter sludge to Arizona's deserts, and from Main Street to Wall Street and back again.
I also realize that even though Picksburgh already has 5 Super Bowl trophies and Arizona has none that this game tonight probably does mean more to Stiller fans, as Drody observes, "what happens to this city if they don't win?" I stayed there for only 3 nights and found myself taking pride in the fact I wore shorts to bed, so you tell me what Picksburgh would be without a good football team.
